Rising Stars: Meet Dani Marco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dani Marco.

Hi Dani, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a multidisciplinary NYC artist, studied painter with a BFA concentration in painting, printmaking, art history and years of work and shows. Gimme a crayon, and I’ll sit alone coloring for hours!! Back in the aughts, I started to explore light and shadow with monochromatic color in my paintings — black acrylic on plastic with a painted color frame. The first painting was a b-boy for my partner (at the time), then a profile of a female face as a gift for my mother — I was just merely messing around with this medium until I attended a live show of a band, a singer with a cigar, clad in a zoot suit, and a gorgeous dancer who caught my eye. She was a woman, a mom(?), fierce on the pole, physically strong, It all clicked, and she became my mind’s muse, unbeknownst to her (and myself). As an artist and a dancer, I connected with this imagery. When light hits the painting, the image moves and dances around the frame. Thus spawned a larger collection of this work and eventually, my foray into the digital world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As most artists, I’m sure, I have struggled with, am I good enough? But, for me the challenge has been: I’m good enough, but what is my voice? Sure, I can paint a hyper-realistic photo of your kids playing on the beach, but what do I WANT to paint. What do I want to say? What is my voice?

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I mostly work in acrylics. I choose this medium because I favor working out of my apartment and I enjoy the challenge of this medium. I like to work the paint on a canvas until it looks like oils. Acrylics are unforgiving, and one must be okay with constant change. In my line paintings on plastic, I use black and perhaps a pop of color, and in this work, it’s about the line of image creating shadow. I’m proud to be recognized for these creations. I was not a digital artist, but learning a new medium has been a blast, and I love growing creatively! I think every artist is unique. I’m an introvert, a dancer, an actor, an activist, so all of that pours into my work, and my piece in Austin is a reflection of that. Thankfully, we artists can voice our voices pictorially!

How do you define success?
Living out one’s truth and gaining happiness and contentment along the way. The rest will follow…
