Rising Stars: Meet Dark Sky Roads

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dark Sky Roads

It’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Dark Sky Roads started as an indie pop duo including Zamar Soto on drums and bass, and Carson Garcia on guitar, keys, and vocals. We started in Carson’s bedroom learning how to song-write with a drum-set and piano. We would go on walks every night after playing bad music and try to figure out a direction for the band. We named our band after the same walks we went on every night, hence the name, Dark Sky “Roads”. After playing our first show with completely different members in Houston, we didn’t play for SEVEN MONTHS (lol). This was because Carson moved away to college :'(. After about a year, we, Zamar and Carson, moved in with each other (heart-eye emoji) shifting our sound. That restored our writing process and led us to writing and recording Something Strange, a song that shifted our sound drastically. We then met Jack Holubec, our bassist. Our sound then shifted once again. We then began to play and write with Jack creating the band’s current day sound.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a moderately bumpy Dark Sky 😀 😀 😀 Road. Right guys?
Obstacles we have faced as band include distance, creative differences over the years, finding members, surgeries including Carson’s brain and chest surgery to remove tumors, and conflicting schedules with different bands and projects.

Finding members was a difficult task within itself. Moving to a new city posed a lot of challenges for networking and finding the local scene. However, the scene when we got here wasn’t as prominent as it is now. There is now a larger quantity of bands, and people who support local music now, which we are very grateful for.

Health problems was another issue we faced as a band. Carson, our singer and guitarist, had a consistent health issue. He was in and out of the hospital multiple times from seizures and failing organs. He had to have brain surgery and take out a tumor which they presumed was the cause for the seizures, yet showed no correlation, causing the seizures not to subside. There was also plenty of shows where he showed up just after throwing up and having full body aches due to his organs failing and played through them cause he’s awesome sauce.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are students at Texas State University. Carson studies music and psychology while Zamar and Jack study sound recording and technology. We are most proud of our work as song-writers, our ability to work with people, and pursuing a career in an industry that we are passionate about. We believe studying audio engineering puts us at a strong advantage and sets us apart from others. Because of our education, we can incorporate different vocal effects in not only our studio recordings, but as well as vocal chains and backing tracks for our live shows to increase the production value.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Carson’s mom (not in a funny way.) She has had to sit through hours of us playing absolutely awful music in his bedroom and didn’t complain once. The neighbors did though. She always supported us and saw our vision even from the beginning. She’s the best. Hi mom!
