Rising Stars: Meet Darryl Messick of San Marcos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darryl Messick.

Hi Darryl, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Darryl Messick. I am a professional Building Designer, and I was born in Southern California. I graduated High School and College there in the 1980’s. I started working in and Architectural firm my first semester in college. I realized that I needed more experience in how homes / buildings are built, so I began working in different aspects of the building industry to create a more knowledgeable, well-rounded person in the field of Architecture, Construction, and Engineering. I worked doing Truss Design, and sales, Engineered wood product design, and specification, material take-offs. I also worked for a large Structural Engineering Company in Newport Beach California, before moving away from California to Colorado in the mid 1990’s. In Colorado, I worked for a Construction based, engineering software company. For the software company, I worked in their engineering department, as well as provided training, tech support, trade shows, and testing. During the 2000’s, I worked as a kind of “Free Agent” working for customers of the software company, helping them implement the software into their day-to-day operations. In 2014, I got back into Architecture, and began working for a friend’s firm that I had worked with in my prior work history. I worked there, and 1 other job where I was the G.C. (Project Manager) building 2 ground up commercial buildings. Once those were completed, I decided to start my own Building Design Company in 2018. I still own and operate Solid Space Design, but now working out of San Marcos, TX. I moved to Texas in August of 2025 after being in a serious car crash, where I was injured, and my dog, (best friend) Jack was killed. I moved to Texas for a fresh start. I am currently working on building a clientele for my Architectural Design Business, and also working on getting my art work that I began creating in 2021 out to the public. I have become a member of the San Marcos Art League, will hopefully have some of my work on display in early 2026.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Trying to balance family and career can be quite challenging, but the most rewarding achievement by a long way. I did not mention that I raised two daughters that are happy healthy, strong, young, adult women.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have been working on creating a fully immersive 3d Digital Art Gallery for other artists to display, promote, or sell their art digitally in a virtual world. The project has turned into me creating art from screenshots of the gallery, and apply layers of different graphic effects for a more abstract image. I just started printing them on canvas and other types of print media.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My daughters. They provided me with the motivation to keep going, to keep improving, and try to be a good role model for them as they grow up.
