Rising Stars: Meet Domonique Phillips of Austin Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Domonique Phillips.

Domonique, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been in love with music—it started as a way to express myself and make sense of what I was going through. In the beginning, I would write down little poems and melodies just for myself, not realizing they were songs in the making. Over time, I found my voice and started sharing my music with others, and the response pushed me to keep going.

It hasn’t always been easy—there are times of doubt, and moments I question if I am good enough—but those challenges shaped my sound and gave me stories worth telling. Music became not just my passion, but my way of connecting with people, giving them something they could feel and relate to.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha! Absolutely not. One of the hardest parts of my journey has been pushing through self-doubt. There were times I’d question if my songs were good enough, or if people would even care to listen. Writer’s block hit me more times than I can count, and sometimes I’d compare myself to other artists instead of trusting my own voice.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I write and sing about real life—love, pain, joy, growth, and the gospel of Jesus Christ—. My songs are personal, but I think that’s what makes them connect with people. I’m proud of the fact that I stay true to myself instead of trying to sound like everyone else. What sets me apart is that I write from the heart, and I want every song to touch the people who hear it! Whether it’s me singing or lyrics I’ve written for another artist.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is the process of turning emotions into music and seeing it resonate with others. There’s nothing like performing live and feeling that energy of hearing from someone that a song of mine helped them through a tough time. Beyond music, I find happiness in quiet moments too—being with loved ones (My husband and 4 beautiful children), writing in my notebook, or just taking time to reflect. Music is my passion, but those little moments of connection, whether through a song or through life, are what really fill me with joy.
