Rising Stars: Meet Donald Thompson of kingsland tx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donald Thompson.

Hi Donald, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Today I serve as the Executive Director of His Joshua House a non profit drug and alcohol treatment center for men. His Joshua House has had a profound life changing effect on my life. I’m going to make a really long story short as I can for now at least, for 20 years i suffered from drug and alcohol addiction and on September 16, 2018 i entered His Joshua House with nothing but the clothes on my back and one shoe. I was 145 pounds and couldn’t even walk. That was the day I took my last drink and drug. Prior to this I had been in every kind of treatment center, institution and jail there is and nothing helped until His Joshua House. His Joshua House works when others don’t, that is just a fact. Upon completing the program here I became a volunteer for a couple of years before being asked to join the Board of Directors where I served as a director, Vice President, and ultimately President of the Board before being asked to step down and take the Executive Director position which I have held for around 18 months. His Joshua House saved my life and I am honored to serve God through helping give men the same thing that was given to me, a God filled life without drugs and alcohol.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being in a ministry is always filled with ups and downs especially when working with men in their addiction. It is absolutely heart breaking to see men rebuild their lives only to throw it all away over and over again.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work today is based around me serving God and doing everything I can to assist men in the rebuilding of their lives by offering guidance as well as my knowledge and personal experience in recovering from addiction. A big part of my job and what sets His Joshua House apart from traditional treatment centers is that not only do we help men overcome their addiction, but we also help address all the other issues that come along with addiction while they are with us. Most of the men that come to us have other outside issues such as, legal issues, bad drivers license, no social security card, or no place to live. I believe that in order for someone to remain sober on their own these type issues need to be addressed. That’s why a lot of my time is spent going with guys to court, helping with driving test, getting forms of identification any anything else that is needed for our residents to be successful after His Joshua House.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
What has worked well for me in finding mentor’s and basic networking has been getting involved with every ministry and cause that I can to expose me to people with other resource’s and goals that are similar to mine.
