Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Summers.
Elizabeth, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Art and painting has always been a huge passion of mine. I was born and raised in Corpus Christi, TX. Most of my family is very creative. Carpentry, glass-work but mainly music. And for me, it was *art*. I began drawing and painting at a very young age. I went to a school that loves Fine Arts and I was able to take art every school year all the way up to High School. There are many mediums to learn within art and I’m very lucky to have learned it all. During my adolescent years, I focused a lot on graffiti. Mainly painting at events or painting street spots. Eventually, I stopped graffiti to focus on my health and during that time, I started working on graphic design.
I spent a lot of time drawing on my iPad and almost every design made I turned into a handmade rug, t-shirt, graphic logo and print. I then learned about microblading and permanent make-up through videos and ads online. It caught my interest. One day I said, “I want to learn that!”
So I started to practice microblading and PMU on my iPad. It reminded me of graffiti in a way…
You need good can control (spray can) to make great lines and good structure. With no good structure, what you painted looks very bad. Same goes with creating brows with a microblade, you need perfect stokes and great structure.
Noticing similarities in the two. I got excited to start. Creating strokes and shading with the machine felt very natural. So I continued practicing and once I felt confident enough… I looked into classes.
My husband and I then decided to move to Austin from Houston. I found an amazing teacher named HoneyBrow and got certified in microblading October 2020. If you ever want to learn about microblading or freshen up your skills, check her out. After my certification, I continued my education and still continue to learn all that I can in permanent make-up. At this moment, I am learning body art and small tattoos. I’m very, very excited to offer that service for my clients in the future. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my clients happy and leaving with confidence. I love my career and wouldn’t trade it for anything else!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A smooth road? Hmm no. Roads are going to be bumpy sometimes, you just have to keep on moving. Since 2018 I was struggling with my health. I was then diagnosed in 2019 with a lifelong chronic illness that has no cure. It took a toll on my mental health and my life. The pain I felt was unbearable, I could barely get up, sick daily, no energy left in my body and I began to struggle with depression. It was a tough time. My husband decided it would be good for me to take a year long break from working and focus on healing. During that time, I am starting practicing microblading and making designs for future projects. We both became mindful of our bodies and started eating plant-based. My health improved quickly.
Then COVID made its appearance to the world and we decided it would be a great time to move to Austin.
Once we successfully moved all our things into our new place, everything was looking up.
A lot of doors began to open up for me, I have my own little space in a beautiful business, I’ve met so many talented and creative people that I’m happy to call my friends.
I’ve been through a lot to get to where I am today, everything isn’t told above but all I can say is I am proud of the woman I am today… in the permanent make-up industry and my life. Keep a positive attitude and keep making moves.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a cosmetic tattoo artist and tooth gem technician. I specialize in brows, freckles, tooth gems and coming very soon (small tattoos). I would say I’m most known for my brows, tooth gems and hand-made rugs. I’m most proud of the fact that I have been able to achieve an amazing career during COVID and having the opportunity to work at Headspace Salon & Co-Op. I’m surrounded by talented and supportive artists. As a result, I’m developing good business skills, starting my own projects and training others.
What sets me apart from other Permanent Make-Up artists’ is my artistry. I am an attentive listener when it comes to my client’s brow needs and what is best for them. All the products I use for brows and tooth gems are vegan and cruelty-free. Each client on my table, I find myself relating to them… not only that, I’m able to have fun, forage friendships and laugh as well as listen to whatever is on their mind. Also, I really enjoy learning new things and have continued my education throughout my career in permanent make-up and tooth gems.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Ooh! I love collaborating. Collaborating with me is easy, just send me a message. I’m open to doing brow/toothgem/rug giveaways, vending at popups, creating art and even working on a rug design together. I’d say best way to show your support is share, save and like my posts. With the algorithm on Instagram these days, saving and sharing a post goes a long way.
