Rising Stars: Meet Gabbi Dominey of North Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabbi Dominey.

Hi Gabbi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been an artist and creative my entire life. I’ve cultivated numerous side hustles, projects, vending setups and events, and small businesses over the years. I’m a multi-faceted creative and work to utilize all of my skills and interests to build one cohesive work. Photography, design, costuming, jewelry, performance, just to name a few of my biggest outlets.
I’m at a new cross road where I am a tooth gem technician under the brand “Bejeweled Bunny ” and sell jewelry under this brand as well. I’ll be attending a fashion design program over the next year and hope to expand on this brand, while starting to push my own limits and dig deep into my own art!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not. I’ve had big dreams for a long time and some how always managed to get in my own way and let myself down. I struggled with addiction for many years of my life and with that comes losing yourself, or rather never really finding yourself in the first place. I’m grateful today to have 3 and 1/2 years sober, and can honestly say I’m doing things in my life and with my art that I have only ever dreamed of. This is really only the beginning for me, I have so much more to share with the world.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
So my work right now is really a cluster of multiple interests. I do tooth gems.. I make jewelry.. I model.. I make costumes.. I’m a clown.. etc etc.. I wear many hats, but the over all goal and point of what I do is to facilitate modes of self expression! Everything I do is to empower and entice the secret *you* hiding inside. Every one has that, everyone wants to let it out and to feel SEEN and be known, often times people are to afraid.

I would have to say I’m most proud of myself. As much as I want my art to inspire others to be their true selves, every day when I work on my projects, its me who is reaping the emotional rewards. When I’m frustrated or exhausted or worried, I’m the one lighting the fire under my rear to get it going. I not only create my work, I AM my work.

I’m not sure what sets me apart from others, if anything. I feel like I have my place in this world and in various art communities just like everyone else does.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Ask questions, like all the time. It will only hurt you in the long run to pretend you know everything. You don’t know something until you know it, and the only way you’re gonna find out is by asking! Haha!
That includes asking for help, sometimes we gotta eat our ego and ask for help.
Thats what’s worked for me when it comes to networking, just going out and really practice active listening to what others have to say.
