Rising Stars: Meet Gabrielle Travis of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Travis

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana so I’m no stranger to tasty treats. Growing up, my grandmother was the neighborhood candy lady which would translate today as a Cottage food entrepreneur. My mother also baked and did catering in addition to her full time job. Believe it or not, I refused to bake for years, I didn’t believe I could do it. I would always say baking was too Science heavy and I much prefer electives! Cooking was my first passion, I cook just as well as I now bake. I started making cookies for family and friends and they really enjoyed them! After a while I posted pictures of what I baked on Facebook and that turned into customers! Today, I absolutely love baking! I’m slowly getting into other things besides desserts such as bagels and sourdough bread. I am hopeful to one day, very soon do this as a full time entrepreneur and open a cafe!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, the road has only had minor bumps. The bulk of my business comes from participating in various pop-up shops and the weather has been my biggest obstacle because most events are held outdoors. I’ve had a few scheduled markets canceled due to very cold and hot temperatures.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My day job consists of all things children! I work full time at a public charter school here in Austin, teaching PK-4. It’s busy but rewarding work. A large percentage of my students primary spoken language is Spanish and the campus is not duel language nor immersion. By the end of the year they know a significant amount of English and my Spanish increases each school year! I’m most proud of the Pre-k team I’m apart of, we are truly a family and work very well together.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising most people who know me or my brand may not know about me is that I am very shy! I love doing pop up markets but my palms are often sweating when I’m engaging with customers! I tend to smile a lot but most times it’s because I’m nervous!
