Rising Stars: Meet Jess Gonzalez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Gonzalez.

Hi Jess, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
First, I want to thank my brother, if it wasn’t for him to push me to believe in myself & talent, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today. Born and raised in Georgetown, Texas. Before I could even finish school, I was blessed with my son Brian who is now married & also has a successful career. Also, my beautiful daughter who is now graduated and also wants to pursue to be a barber. The hustle began with my kids. I was a mom at a very young age so working to provide for them was top priority.

Until I was financial stable to go back to school and finally do what I also wanted to do. I can speak on the top three careers I wanted to pursue. Don’t judge me ok!

One a fashion designer, I LOVE fashion since I was born, two I wanted to be a fly girl like Jennifer Lopez when she was in living color show. I danced my whole life my mom made sure I was always busy. Three a Hairstylist, I admire creativity. I would style my friends for fun & special occasions.

I’ve been behind the chair for 13 years now and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s hard work but if you keep pushing, it’s all worth wild. I’ve been given opportunities that I’m grateful for. I began working with Aveda the start of my career, I’ve worked so many fashions shows hair shows and alongside top stylists. After nine years with Aveda, I moved salons and worked with wella. Now I’m an independent stylist, my own boss top best decision of my career. I’ve also been an educator for Aveda teaching others is also a passion. This industry is for ever-evolving and if I can change and help a young individual achieve the start their career then WE both won.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a single mom of two at the time was a struggle. I worked during the day and attended beauty school at night. I worked almost 60 hours a week with school & work. I put in all my sweat and tears to be where I’m at today. I never gave up but I sure did want to at times.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Pixie Jess is my name. I specialize in pixie cuts. I love any women that embrace her short hair no matter what, I’m just here to back them up. I also enjoy perms! I’m Most proud of never given up. I surpassed my fear of failing but I here and better. I’m unordinary. I stand out the gurl with a shaved head.

What were you like growing up?
I was such a tomboy, very athletic, and competitive. The girly part as I got older, figure out who I was. I’m still a Tomboy low-key.
