Rising Stars: Meet Jessica Mims

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Mims.

Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I had an old camera sitting around my house for years and had never touched the thing. At the time I was a bartender and my bar was being bulldozed to build condos. I decided to take my camera up to the bar to capture the demolition. As it turns out, the CEO of the demolition company was there and offered to pay me for my work. Then everything just fell into place.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Surprisingly smooth! I vet all of my clients before I take them on to make sure we’re a good fit and it’s worked out really well for me! I have amazing clients who I now have friendships with. I’ve photographed so many weddings only to continue photographing the same couples as their families grow. I absolutely love it!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in two polar opposite things; weddings and architecture. I love them both for completely different reasons. Weddings are so wild and filled with love, fun and excitement. You get to be there on the best day of someone’s life! Architecture is so calming. You’re alone and you get to really take your time lining up every shot. I think I’m most proud of the NY Times using one of my architectural photos for a bit they did and landscape architecture. As far as what sets me apart from others… I felt weird answering this question so I asked my friend whom I do a lot of photography work for; “Your ability to organize chaos while simultaneously injecting joy into any situation.” -my friend

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Definitely my outgoing personality. I’m able to connect with people very easily and it’s given me the ability to pull some exciting images from them as a result. Also, people absolutely love that I have “Say Cheese” tattooed onto my forearm. It cracks them up and I get a genuine smile from them every time.
