Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe D.
Joe, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in the country. Small town outside of Austin called St .John’s Colony. Music was always a get away for me. Heavily influenced by Scarface, Ice Cube, 2 Pac before being introduced to DJ Screw & S.U.C. Thats when I started to freestyle but still no intentions of making music. 1999 I got into trouble w/the law and went to prison. Hard-headed as I was, I stayed in in trouble so I would write poems for people for commissary. Another inmate from Dallas had asked me to try and rap my poem over a beat he made on the table. It flipped a switch. After being released in 2008 I started making music with 2 of my cousins. Thats where RareBreed came from. After 2 mixtapes I caught a violation and went back to prison. Few years later came home (2012) & left rap alone for around to focus on myself and family. Ran into MakLyfe, long time friend who’s been heavy in the music scene for years and said to pull up to the studio of a mutual friend, G Dolla, & it just felt right. We’re running the Winner Circle brand up. Made of different entities who came together and formed a solid movement. During this process we went down and collaborated with DJ Red of SUC and made the 1st slowed down album with straight Austin artist. I met Dominican Jay w/Major Gains, a marketing agency, who’s tenure in this game has pushed me further than I thought. In 2 days under Major Gains I was able to lock in an ambassador partnership with Carabuena Tequila, tour with the squad, have multiple radio interviews, my music played on Shady 45 and throughout Atlantas Airport and many other major plays & we have some major, major plays fixing to happen. I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been smooth road for me. It’s not a competition in my eyes. Im just doing what I love to do so as long as I’m making music, I’m in a good place. If anybody competing with me they just spitting in the wind lol
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I consider myself and all around artist who creates reality music that you can close your eyes and see. I don’t consider myself a rapper or a lyricist or anything in a box. Im an artist. I write all my music, I rap, I sing, I sometimes call myself The Hook Gawd because I can make a hook to damn near anything. Just an all around artist who don’t mind working outside my comfort zone cause im so musically diverse, I adapt to damn near any vibe & I say that humbly
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Market yourself, step outside the box and connect with others. Build your audience and stay consistent. Most of all do you because there isn’t a person on earth that can do me better than me. Stand out in all you do and be authentic
