Rising Stars: Meet Joseph Sanchez of West

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Sanchez.

Joseph Sanchez

Hi Joseph, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a 22-year-old who grew up in Oklahoma and did not have much growing up and being one of many in this world who had to endure many struggles at a young age but have yet let it affect the character of oneself. The beginning of my longest journey yet started at the age of 8, when I was taken into foster care, where I presumed for the following eight years. Being in foster care didn’t give me many opportunities to do much. Still, it allowed me early in my life to have the confidence and ability to talk to people and network how I want to. I was later adopted and graduated high school in 2019 in El Paso, TX, with a short but exhilarating military experience following shortly. After getting out of the military I was lost, and I wasn’t sure what my next steps would be, but I knew I needed to take one. After what seemed like forever, feeling stuck, trying to figure out what to do, I picked up a pair of clippers and instantly fell in love. I see myself doing it for a very long time, and I’m only going to get better at it. So along with the lessons I’ve learned and the amazing people I have met and will meet while helping who I can and making great experiences along the way, I plan to make this a growth full and productive Journey.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I could see some smooth roads and roads that no one should drive on, and if they have, I’m not sure how they sleep at night. I’ve experienced homelessness; I was taken away from my parent at a very young age; I know what it’s like not to have food in the house; I’ve been cold with no heat. I’ve walked miles to nowhere. I’ve been beaten; I was an adult as a child.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a barber, and I love it. And I’m known for my style of cutting. When I was in the army, whenever I was put on a 24-hour shift, I would have my sketchbook out, drawing or brainstorming for my next piece. It’s something I just started doing, and I fell for it. I had no idea how to plug this into my everyday life at the time, but I found it by cutting my hair. I’m most proud of the progress of the quality of my work. My personality is definitely what sets me apart. Cutting hair is not just about cutting hair to me.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I’ve learned not to take the things or the people we have in our life for granted.
