Rising Stars: Meet Joshua Bowlby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Bowlby.

Hi Joshua, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Blessed Ghost is something of a dream project that I had dreamt of for years. I had always enjoyed the blending of genres between indie, folk, and pop. However, I had little to no experience writing that type of music. So for many years, I stuck with metal and hardcore.

After neglecting that passion for so long and dabbling here and there, I finally said that even if I don’t know what I am doing, I am still going to try and make the music I want to make, the music that I can put my emotions into. Something I have a hard time conveying otherwise.

If I was going to do it though, I wanted to take it as seriously as I could with production, marketing, and quality. My experience in other genres had taught me a lot of do’s and don’ts and led me to the right people to work with. So I like to think that this is all happening when it was supposed to happen.

Now I am really pushing myself to make this happen more than ever and putting all of my heart into it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think if you ask any musician this question, the answer is always going to be that it’s never a smooth road. However, that’s kind of what shapes us as creatives and musicians.

Struggles I would say as someone who is working primarily solo that a lot of the pressure is on your shoulders. You can try to get some others involved but you have to be strategic about it. Which also gets “bumpy” (to continue the road theme here).

On top of this fact, I am not someone with a background in theory or any clinical training, so there is a learning curve in trying to write the music and put it together in a way that makes sense to not only your listeners but the engineers you work with.

But that’s kind of the fun of it, it’s all growth.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
So professionally, I am a Graphic Designer, UX Designer, and Cinematographer. I have been working in design for over 10 years and currently work as a UX Designer in the games industry.

I think I get lucky with having so many creative passions that I am able to curate most of everything I need creatively for my projects even when playing in the metal bands I was in or some of the other rock projects I am in currently. I am able to create marketing, promotional material, and even print design stuff.

I am always just thrilled to see my work printed and people feeling proud of wearing said work. Recently released some Blessed Ghost merch and seeing people pick it up gets me so excited!

What’s next?
This year was a big change already. I moved here to Austin, TX from Central FL. So having this opportunity to kind of rebrand and refocus has been really interesting.

As far as the future goes, I am working on an EP that I hope to release this year. Currently, the first single of that EP is being mixed and I will actually be shooting the music video for this upcoming month. From there I may look into what a live show could look like.
