Today we’d like to introduce you to Lala Klosterman.
Hi Lala, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Laura Salazar Klosterman, my family and friends call me Lala. I’m from Round Rock Tx and lived there my whole life. I’ve seen Austin grow and I love my city and where I’m from!
From a young age, I knew I wanted to become Hairstylist. I was very eager to begin a career so that I can soon be able to live independently. During the summer of my Junior Year of High School, I enrolled into Central Texas Beauty College. I was also working at a nearby salon as a receptionist/assistant. At age 19, I received my cosmetology license and became a Hairstylist.
For 4 years at this salon, I was cutting hair a LOT! Clipper haircuts, bobs galore, pixies, short layers, long layers, flat tops, fades, shags, etc. I had mastered hair cutting. As a colorist I felt that my options were limited, I was doing the same chunky highlights and frosted tips. I needed to branch out and leave the salon that I had very much appreciated.
I looked for a Salon/Spa and found an Aveda Concept Salon, close to the Arboretum. In the five years, I worked there I reached the level to a Master Stylist and the salon was in Top 500 Salon in the nation. After all my hard work building a clientele, days and hours of training, and dedication, I decided to go independent and work for myself.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting so young in this industry, there were some challenges. People would get nervous to sit in my chair and questioned my amount of experience. I had to learn quickly to show confidence in my abilities and not allow anyone discourage me, including fellow stylist. I stayed professional and focused on what’s most important, to provide for myself and my family.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been a hairstylist for 20 years, and continue to learn and strive in my passion! As a Hairstylist I do it all, color, cutting, men’s grooming, makeup, waxing, extensions, skin, and bridal styles.
Today I mainly focus on balayage highlighting techniques, color, cuts and men’s grooming.
I create styles that accommodate my clients lifestyle. Natural looks that compliment my clients and doesn’t involve too much maintenance are my main goals. I love it when my clients say that their friends can’t believe they color their hair because it looks so natural! That makes me happy! But I can also do vivids/vibrant colors by request.
I’m very proud to have this much experience and have worked and learned from so many other talented hairstylist. But mostly proud to be my own boss and run my own salon. This is the greatest achievement.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think the most surprising thing no one knows about me is that I’m really really shy! I’m mostly comfortable with one on one interaction and thankfully in this profession only one person can sit my chair at a time. But this job has definitely helped me overcome my timid nerves and shyness.
