Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Mann.
Hi Lindsey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After being exclusively a stay-at-home mom for a few years I really needed a creative outlet. Something I could pursue outside of motherhood. Since I was still in the baby-phase myself, I originally thought I’d enjoy niching into newborn photography but it just didn’t light me up. I think my journey to boudoir portraits really parallels my personal journey over the past year. My husband deployed and I made myself a promise to prioritize my self-care while he was gone so I could be there for my daughters as the best version of myself. As moms, we have a tendency to put ourselves very LAST on the priority list but that’s the worst thing we can do! It’s so crucial to invest in ourselves so we can show up for our people. During the pandemic, I had listened to a podcast interviewing a boudoir photographer and it struck something in me. I hosted a model call, did my first session, and was immediately addicted. I was like “I can do this EVERY DAY!” In my little online community, I post a LOT about self-love and self-care. We all need reminders that we’re worthy of every good thing and of celebrating every win no matter how small. We are so hard on ourselves and having a boudoir session allows women to see the best version of themselves. When you see it, it’s easier to BE it. It’s so fun and inspiring getting to meet these women and become their friends. Seriously the best job in the world!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. I struggle a LOT with imposter syndrome and finding my unique style. I also struggle with balancing my business with being a good mom. That was especially hard last year when my husband was deployed. But thankfully we have an incredible family and wonderful friends to support us.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently, I specialize in boudoir portraits or intimate portraits. I offer a very high-touch, luxury experience to my clients. It’s very much about relationship building for me. We meet at least once before their session over coffee or cocktails (my treat!) so we can get to know each other and start planning their session. I take a collaborative approach to it and really want them to feel comfortable when they show up for their session. I have a client closet they can use if they want. On the morning of their session, we play their favorite music and have mimosas while they get their hair and makeup professionally done. It’s so important to me that they have FUN! I also do same day viewing. I send them off to lunch (on me!) and do a soft edit of their gallery. When they come back we do the reveal! That way they don’t have to wait another couple of weeks to see their images. Mostly, I’m proud of the friendships I’ve made with clients.
What matters most to you? Why?
Building trust and relationships with my clients. Choosing to have a boudoir session is extremely brave and vulnerable, so it’s an honor to connect with these women and hear their stories. They truly do inspire me and ultimately we end up friends. In fact, I did a bridal boudoir for one client, then went on to shoot her maternity photos and soon we’ll be doing her newborn photos!
