Rising Stars: Meet Liza Proch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liza Proch.

Hi Liza, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up in a creative home, I started sketching, drawing, and painting from the time I could hold a brush or pencil. The way color and movement work together on a canvas to create a world of their own has always captivated me, and I began experimenting with acrylic paints on my bedroom wall one day in 2018. Oversized flowers, larger-than-life foliage, dark, moody backgrounds – I fell in love with the process, the creativity, and the end result. From the bedroom wall full of flowers, I began painting canvases, and found that nothing makes me feel more alive than the hope of adding a little more beauty to the world.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As a young artist, I think there’s a certain level of skepticism that shows up as a result of going against the grain; deciding to work for yourself doing what you’re passionate about definitely raises some eyebrows and sparks questions like, “soo…is that your real job?” I’m extremely grateful to have been raised in an environment of creativity, encouraged to pursue the artful life, but I think every artist, at some point in their career, faces doubt, whether it’s from others or themselves. But even doubt serves its purpose, forcing the artist to press harder into the “why” behind the art they create.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Oversized florals on canvas with dark and moody backgrounds play the central role in my work. The rich colors that are found in flora and fauna continually inspire me and integrate themselves into each new piece that I create. I recently also released The Fredericksburg Coloring Book, a high-end coloring book designed to invite people into the history and rich culture of my little hometown, and a line of vinyl stickers and postcards to go along with it. When I’m not painting, I love getting the opportunity to work with small businesses, whether it’s painting a mural, designing a bandana, or creating a line of one-of-a-kind apparel.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Podcasts and audiobooks are basically my love language, since I’m able to listen while working on a painting or new design. A few of my favorite podcasts lately are How I Built This with Guy Raz, American Scandal by Wondery, BibleProject Podcast, and Fight Hustle, End Hurry, a podcast series by John Mark Comer and Jeff Bethke. I’ve always loved old or classic books, so you’ll often find me listening to something by Ernest Hemingway, Charles Dickens, or C.S. Lewis.
