Rising Stars: Meet Meg Burk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Burk.

Hi Meg, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Since I was very young, I knew that I wanted to have an artistic career. The first goal was to work on animated movies – I was inspired by the animators and artists that worked on Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. and wanted to spend all of my days drawing and telling stories. After some time in college, I ended up pivoting to a business degree from the University of Texas at Dallas. After graduating, I was able to work on one movie, two video games, and miscellaneous projects over the years.

In 2019 I wasn’t fulfilled in my job as a producer at video game studio and I started posting brand designs for made-up businesses on Instagram. I know on some level I was trying to prove that I could do it so that brands would start hiring me, but I had no idea what would become of my experiment.

By the summer of 2020, I was getting consistent branding and illustrative work. By word of mouth and via Instagram, I slowly built up a community and client base. In 2021 I took a leap of faith and moved to Austin at the same time that I took my business full time. Some might call that crazy, but I really felt called to do this. Now with almost a year under my belt in this city, I’ve never felt more confident, aligned, healthy, and happy. My business is growing and I’m incredibly fulfilled bringing business identities to life and using my business and design skill sets side by side.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The inconsistency has its pros and cons. A huge part of me loves the slow weeks as much as I love the busy ones, although currently I’m learning how to structure my schedule and projects to help build a more consistent and predictable schedule! For now I use the slow weeks to create art for myself or to explore other mediums besides graphic design and digital art, such as watercolor or acrylic painting. Working with other media is a great exercise to keep my love for art and painting flourishing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I primarily do branding design now, which often encompasses packaging or product designs as well. The brands that seek out my work are often local businesses with a love for all things nature, handmade, and intentionality. I like to say I work with visionaries who forge their own paths, or with brands that have stories to tell.

Besides branding and logos, I’m recognized for drawings of ladies with hats. People seem to love them the most!

Also, this year, I am making and releasing a font every month. This personal challenge has allowed me to open up new avenues for my designs to reach beyond what I’m capable of in a business day, and seeing the fonts find homes in designs around the world is super cool.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success, to me, is the ability to pursue your passion. For me, that’s art, design, and business. Success is when I don’t have to worry about bills or deadlines and I’m free to design to the best of my ability for each client. Getting lost in the prompt, exploring the world and nature to find inspiration…those are the moments where I feel like I need to pinch myself.
