Rising Stars: Meet Miles Mosby of Southwest Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miles Mosby.

Hi Miles, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Landscape/hardscape started for me at a young age. I grew up doing country type work, building stone walls and wood fences. Planting and picking tomatoes and squash. Throughout high school I worked at Shoal Creek Nursery in central Austin. I picked up odd jobs on the side like delivering and planting trees, installing edging, trimming hedges. All that sorta stuff.
I spent several years in college as an ecology major at Colorado State and then Auburn University. During that time I was lucky to have found a high end hardscape company to work and learn in. Covid came around, classes went online, and I dropped out. After a short stint working and staying out way too late in Austin’s restaurant industry I started picking up landscape jobs again. A close friend of mine moved down to Austin and we started Fortunate Sun Landscapes. Two guys, one truck, one trailer, and some hand tools. That’s about all we were for the first year. We were busy and would take on all kinds of jobs. We paid ourselves enough to get by and reinvested the rest into stronger trucks and better tools. Now in year 4 we are a company of 6 guys with both a project and maintenance division. I’ve told plenty of people, “There’s not a better city in the USA to start a company in.” We love our community and the natural environment that it’s situated in.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There has certainly been some rough spots. Friends would say to me, “You’re your own boss. You can do whatever you want.”.
There were plenty of days I would miss having my old boss over my shoulder giving me a thumbs up or down. If you are in your early twenties starting a company, there is some shooting from the hip that goes along with that.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We work in all mediums, often in unison. Stone, steel, wood and dirt. I am most proud of how our crew has been able to grow their knowledge of landscape construction and plant life. Everyone can do everything and we are doing more every day.
It’s Texas, hot and dry. As to not go against mother nature’s grain, we emphasize native plants in our work. Which doesn’t just mean gravel and cactuses. Central Texas has a beautiful plant pallet with every color bloom in the rainbow. By pushing native species, we able to encourage biodiversity and water conservation.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My early years were spent in the hill country of Georgia. Rolling pastures, clean streams, and tall pine trees. My father would bring me home glass aquariums he would find in antique shops. I would outfit them with the flora and fauna I’d find while wandering through the woods. It was a beautiful childhood and I loved every minute of it.
