Rising Stars: Meet Moxie of Downtown Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moxie

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story started when I went to my first drag show at Oilcan Harry’s that, at the time, was hosting Bosco who was on RPDR season 14. This was on 5/23/22. I fell in love with the art and the local scene quite quickly after that. It wasn’t until one night when Oilcan Harry’s hosted Yvie Oddly (7/20/2022) that I volunteered to be one of the audience members to come up on stage! Ritzy Bitz was the host that evening. I made it to the final round of the audience game and ended up winning in the end. I felt so free when performing the lip sync that secured me the win. After the lipsync and win Ritzy Bitz called me a “STAR”. And that’s all I needed to hear! I then decided drag was for me!! And so my journey began.
It wasn’t until 1/7/2023 that I made my drag debut at the very first non-competitive drag signup night, Big Tits Bigger Dreams. A monthly show the first Saturday of every month hosted by Brigitte Bandit at Cheer Up Charlie’s. That night I felt more like myself than I ever had! Something changed in me for the better that night. By my 10th time in drag I was cohosting BTBD alongside Brigitte. That night gave me the confidence to try new things.
By my 12th time in drag I was taking promo pictures for a competition at Oilcan Harry’s, at the time was called Grackle Games Cycle 4. I was eliminated my 4th week but that’s okay. I gained a lot of insight and also got better on the microphone those 4 weeks.
I then used that knowledge to assist me on my next adventure. Opening up for Chappell Roan!! That’s right! 11/1/2023 I was hosting and performing as an opener for Chappell Roans Midwest Princess tour at Emo’s. That was my first time hosting by myself and it was my 28th time in drag.
(Oh yeah! I keep count of how many times I’ve been in drag lol!)
Drag helped me realize I was in fact a trans woman. As soon as I was celebrated for my femininity it all clicked. This was what I was born to do and this is who I was meant to be. I am proudly in the Haus of Trans with my drag mother The Trans Era!
Moxie helped me grow into the person I am today. I have now been in drag a total of 68 times. Not too many, but I think every time I’ve been in drag has been a new milestone and I’ve skyrocketed since starting.
I’m a rising star here in Austin TX, and this star shines bright!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say the road got bumpy pretty quickly. It’s like as soon as I started drag, TX wanted to start creating laws to try and ban it. They then started targeting trans folks and trans kids. So it didn’t take long for me to start being an advocate for the trans and drag community. Dropping a ballot when I could and just staying caught up with everything happening. It’s still an ongoing fight but we were built tough and as long as we stay strong and stick together, there’s nothing we can’t achieve.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Moxie is a hyper femme drag queen. I’m known for having big hips and a stamped mug.
Very much known for hosting the Chappell Roan show at Emo’s right before her career skyrocketed.

I would say I specialize in themed nights. And I’d say that proudly!! I don’t just do a song by an artist. I’ll learn the choreo, I’ll look the part. I recently did a Taylor Swift night where I learned the chair work to “Vigilante Shit”. I recently hosted a Kacey Musgraves drag show. I’ve also cohosted the Chappell Roan drag show alongside Brigitte Bandit. Alanis Morissette, Renee Rapp, Taylor Swift, Kacey Musgraves, even Shrek the list goes on lol

I would say in my journey I’m proud to have a kind soul. I’ll help anyone who needs it. I get that from my mother. Momma Moxie. Biological mom. She is an icon in herself. She’s always supporting me at my shows! I’m so thankful for her.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Ritzy Bitz deserves the credit of giving me the confidence to start drag.

Brigitte Bandit deserves the credit for giving me the platform to be able to start drag as a newbie.

Without those two I’m not sure if Moxie would be here right now.

Momma Moxie plays a big roll in my success as well. Shes been my #1 supporter since day 1. I wouldn’t be here without that support.
