Rising Stars: Meet Nicole Savageau

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Savageau.

Hi Nicole, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After traveling the world and working as a veterinarian in Australia for six years, I moved to Austin in 2017 to continue my veterinary career. I have been a veterinarian for the last 12 years since completing my undergraduate degree in Animal Science from Cornell University and my veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania. During the pandemic, I decided to start making sweet, short videos for kids. My goal was to create fun and educational content in 10 minutes or less to teach kids about different species of animals, focusing on what makes each species unique and how to best care for that species.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a veterinarian is so rewarding! However, it was a very long (and expensive!) Eight years of education to get here. There were countless personal and financial sacrifices that had to happen to get me where I am today. The veterinary industry is also extremely busy and full of stressors, especially since the pandemic with the spike in pet ownership.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am most proud of, and most well known for, the entertaining videos I make for kids on my “Animal Kid-dom with Dr. Nicole” pages on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. I have had so much fun making these videos, and they have renewed my passion for my profession. The kind and positive feedback I have received from both kids and adults has been so rewarding! I would love to take what I have learned to create a television show for kids one day.

Most veterinarians focus on either large or small domestic animals, but I am unique in the sense that I treat both exotic pet species and traditional dogs and cats. Recently I have embarked on a career change and will be doing house call appointments to see these species with a company called The Vets, which will be a new and exciting adventure!

I am also known among my colleagues as a cat whisperer, which is a huge accomplishment in itself given the personalities of some cats! I do adore them and they are my favourite species to work with along with rats, reptiles, and of course, dogs!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Never assume, and be patient!

Nicole is probably the most caring veterinarian (and human) that I know. She took time out of her day to examine my parents sick bird and prescribe some medication. Her videos for Animal Kid-dom are a joy for me and my kids to watch!
