Rising Stars: Meet Niyah Nettles of Killeen, TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Niyah Nettles

Hi Niyah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story started pretty young. I’ve always been a lover of art & beauty. From watching my mother getting dressed to watching plenty seasons of America’s Next Top Model; I tried to mimic what I saw. In middle school my mother wouldn’t allow me to wear anything other than lipgloss, so naturally I snuck to apply makeup outside my home. When I got to highschool I was able to be more open/creative with makeup. My parents paid for Barbizon modeling classes where I graduated & auditioned for model calls. Years later in college, I practiced makeup on others for things like pageants, homecoming, graduations, birthdays etc.. I’m so thankful for the other creatives I met in college. I worked with friends modeling for brands and other photographers building their portfolios. The clients who trusted in my knowledge to allow me to freelance on them back then have helped me grow tremendously. After college I took myself seriously, I made a website, developed my brand & organically the clients came. Here I am a few years later and I’ve relocated to Texas. The move was so scary, I didn’t have the motivation to put myself out there in a brand new state. But thankfully with the support/push from my fiancé, friends, family I have grown my clientele in central Texas. I hope for more prosperity and networking opportunities to reach the goals I’ve set for myself.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road is ever easy. Personally I suffered with self sabotage, comparing myself to others, fear of rejection plus more. At first I was too broke to have the things I needed, then I told myself I wasn’t ready, followed by telling myself I don’t know enough to be taken serious. All were self deprecation & second guessing… Once Covid happened & the world shut down, I was sure the beauty industry wouldn’t recover. The thing I loved to do, nobody had a need for anymore… In reality I had to learn I was my own worst critic as well as my own cheerleader. Mentally I allowed ME to stand in the way of me, and sometimes I still do.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My brand is NaturalBeatNiyahh. I love makeup & skin care. I do makeup for whatever anyone may need, whether it be a photoshoot, wedding, fashion show, graduations, whatever. I specialize in makeup. NaturalBeatNiyahh came from earlier clients who expressed how pleased they were with my work & making them look like themselves. I’m proud that my work doesn’t look like anyone else’s. I’m proud clients tell me it doesn’t feel like they have a face of makeup on. I’m proud (but also concerned) when clients tell me they slept in their makeup because they didn’t want to take it off and it still looks just as good the next day! Haha no seriously, do not sleep in your makeup PLEASE! But I’m proud of my ability to show up authentically myself in an industry of other talented artists. I think I am what sets me apart from others, my unique style of makeup, my customer service, & diverse portfolio help aid in what makes ME me.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The central TX area is so full of opportunity, diversity, and great food! That’s what is the best thing about moving here. Haha! Austin’s continuous growth has opened my eyes to networking in areas I never thought possible. What I like the least would be the lack of adequate seafood, but I’m bias coming from Port City, good ole Mobile, Alabama has spoiled me.
