Rising Stars: Meet Ram Vela of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ram Vela

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Ram Vela and I’ve been playing music in Austin since the early 2000’s. Back then, I played music with Whitman (2005 – 2013) and started this project back in 2018 and I’m grateful it’s still going strong.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Whether it be starting a band, maintaining it and booking shows, it’s always challenging. The city of Austin has always been filled with very talented musicians, but can also be very cliquey (which can be a good or bad thing). I love the idea of building community but at times, that depends on style, fit, genre, age, etc… I don’t ever want this project to feel like working another full-time job. I started it with the intentions of playing with people I admire and most importantly, making sure we’re having fun and not taking ourselves too damn seriously.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my day-to-day job, I work as a Transfer Specialist at Austin Community College. Part of my role with the college is helping students determine the best path to complete their associate or bachelor’s degree, transfer successfully, and meet their educational goals. In the last 5 years, it’s been a very rewarding experience being able to guide student(s) through this process and watch them meet their transfer goals and eventually graduating from their dream school.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I am very thankful to have the support of my wife, supervisor, team and most importantly, the students I help.

As far as the band goes, I can’t thank the other members of my band enough for their support as well as the folks who listen to our music.
