Today we’d like to introduce you to Saskia & Jenna Markley & Burwell.
Hi Saskia & Jenna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Our business officially launched two years ago, but the idea had been developing for much longer. Working in labor & delivery, postpartum, and the NICU, we kept seeing the same problem: many new parents were leaving the hospital completely unprepared for what life with a newborn really looks like. In Austin, so many families don’t have relatives nearby to step in and support them, and that lack of help contributes to some very real issues—including increased stress, preventable complications, and even higher maternal mortality rates during the postpartum period.
We knew there had to be a better way to support families through this transition. That’s why we built a team of registered nurses and certified doulas who guide parents through every stage—pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period. We offer prenatal education, birth support, postpartum visits, and overnight newborn care. Our approach is unique because we combine the clinical experience of hospital nursing with the holistic, continuous support of doula care. Families get both the evidence-based knowledge and the emotional, hands-on reassurance they need.
When we started, it was just the two of us—Jenna and Saskia—personally visiting doctors we had worked with and asking them to refer us to families who needed help. It was very grassroots, one family at a time. Today, we’ve grown into a team of over six professionals, and we’re expanding quickly. The most rewarding part is that most of our growth has come from word-of-mouth—families we’ve worked with referring others because the support made such a difference.
So while we’re only two years into the business on paper, the mission behind it has been in the making for many years, and we’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come—and how many families we’ve been able to support along the way.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road. Starting a business while working full-time, managing a family, and keeping up with everyday life was incredibly intimidating. For both of us, taking that leap of faith felt risky—especially because nursing is what we’ve always known, and entrepreneurship was a whole new world.
One of the biggest challenges was realizing how much we needed to learn on the business side. We’re nurses at heart, so things like marketing, operations, legal processes, and financial management were not second nature to us. There were plenty of moments where we were learning as we went, making mistakes, and figuring out how to navigate running a company while still being present for our families and clients.
But even with the challenges, we never lost sight of why we started. We knew the need in our community was real, and the mission to support families—especially during such a vulnerable time—was worth every hurdle. That purpose kept us moving forward, even on the hard days.
We’ve already grown so much through this process, both personally and professionally, and we’re still learning every day. As we continue refining our systems and ourselves as leaders, our goal remains the same: to offer the very best care possible for the families we serve.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in providing comprehensive, compassionate support to families through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period—all in the comfort of their own homes. What we’re really known for is blending clinical expertise with a warm, personal approach that helps parents feel confident, informed, and truly cared for.
Our services cover the full spectrum of perinatal support. We offer prenatal education and help parents create personalized birth plans, and we provide hands-on labor support when the big day arrives. After birth, we continue with postpartum care visits, lactation support, swaddling techniques, early sleep guidance, and resources for postpartum depression. We also connect families with trusted community resources to make sure they never feel alone or overwhelmed.
Ultimately, families describe us as loving, knowledgeable, and incredibly supportive—professionals who bring calm and clarity into an otherwise stressful and vulnerable time. We meet families exactly where they are, often quite literally, by supporting them in their homes and helping them transition into parenthood with confidence.
How do you think about luck?
I think every small business needs a little bit of luck on its side, and we’re no exception. We’re incredibly grateful for the success we’ve had so far—especially the timing of meeting the right families, connecting with supportive providers, and receiving referrals from people who believed in us early on. Those moments of good fortune have absolutely helped us grow.
Of course, we’ve worked hard and stayed committed to our mission, but we also recognize and appreciate the role that luck can play in opening doors and bringing the right opportunities at the right time. We just hope that luck continues to be on our side as we keep expanding and supporting more families in our community.
