Today we’d like to introduce you to Stefan Sanders.
Hi Stefan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Central Texas Philharmonic (CTP) was founded in 2018 through the merger of the Round Rock Symphony and Georgetown Symphony Society, uniting two strong traditions of musical excellence and community service. Under the leadership of Music Director Stefan Sanders, CTP launched its inaugural season in 2019 with six programs and a new Youth Orchestra, which continues to nurture young talent across the region. The orchestra has expanded its reach and reputation, performing live film scores with Texas Performing Arts, serving as Orchestra in Residence for the Texas State International Piano Competition, and bringing classical music to diverse venues across Central Texas. Education remains at the heart of CTP’s mission. The Youth Orchestra performs five concerts annually, collaborates with CTP musicians, and participates in community outreach programs that offer free instruments and instruction to students in Title I schools. CTP stands as a vibrant cultural cornerstone, dedicated to bringing exceptional music, fostering the next generation of musicians, and enriching the quality of life throughout Central Texas.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The non-profit arts world is a daily grind to secure funding and support. As CTP grows, our network of donors and supporters grows. But as the old showbiz saying states, it only takes 20 years to become an overnight success!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As an orchestral conductor, so much of what I do is bringing awareness to musicians and audiences alike. Conductors work from a full orchestral score and the orchestral musicians work from their single part. Having the entire score in front of me allows me to see the entire piece, every instrument and every indication the composer has given in every moment of the piece. It is sort of like having the blueprints for a building. When the orchestra and conductor get together for rehearsal, I work from the score to respond to what the orchestra is doing and illuminate certain instruments that either have a melodic/primary function or an accompanying/background function. Many times this is clear and obvious, but sometimes it is not. Also, while some pieces are very familiar to the musicians sometimes they aren’t and the conductor also works with the orchestra to develop an interpretation of a given work. This is fun work because it really requires all of us to think artistically and conceptually, working together towards a common sound or musical atmosphere.
Any big plans?
We are really looking forward to the three performances of the first Lord of the Rings film, The Fellowship of the Ring with live soundtrack taking place at Bass Concert hall on June 12, 13, and 14. It is a huge orchestra and the music is marvelous.
