Today we’d like to introduce you to Susanna Lee.
Hi Susanna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started playing music out live at a public venue regularly 15 years ago at Christian music night every Monday night at Mozart’s Coffee with John Wilson. I helped co-host that residency for about a decade until the shutdown. During those years, I gained many experiences along with other guest artists there, which led to more collaborations & playing other venues & gigs. I played their famous Christmas light show for quite a few years, released a demo there & am now releasing an ep. I’ve been expanding my opportunities ever since.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
I’ve learned the hard way that God is the one who makes my path smooth. No one person has power over the direction of my life or my career except Him. You have to fight distractions cause if you have a dream, it has to be your top priority. I wasted so much time. Learning to navigate venues & relationships has been & continues to be challenging. You must know how to communicate and handle different & difficult situations in all aspects of the music business. You can’t listen to those who don’t have your best interests in mind or have their own agendas. You have to believe in what you’re doing & go after it to get things done yourself. Be very careful with mixing business & pleasure; if so, be prepared to lose that business partner; otherwise, keep these separate. Never work for a booking agent who doesn’t work for the artist. Keep those around who consistently show up, support you & do the same for them.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a multiracial musician, singer, pianist, & songwriter. I book & promote most of my gigs & projects. I’m able to do these multidimensional things by the grace of God. I desire to be faithful to what He put me on earth for by drawing people closer to Him, bringing Him glory, & as one of my mentor’s Joley Flowers put it “sing the hell out of people.”
