Rising Stars: Meet Victoria Sawdon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Sawdon.

Victoria, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I guess you can say I got lucky that from an early age, I knew I wanted a career of some sort in the beauty industry, although at that time I didn’t know what. Fast forward to adulthood, that plan didn’t quite go as I planned and spent 15 years in the dental industry before I decided to finally pursue my childhood dream. I knew I had always loved make-up and would often do my friend’s make-up and even did some freelance jobs that I would book for weddings or special occasions. The passion was always there despite working in dentistry, I enjoyed that it allowed me to be creative and artistic, it was something that just came natural to me. Seeing people’s reaction after seeing themselves and expressing how much they loved their make up, I knew really meant that they felt beautiful. That was always so special to me! About ten years ago, I had looked into permanent makeup courses out of curiosity and although at the time I was not in a place to leave my secure job the seed had been planted. As the years passed and social media began to blow up, I kept hearing more and more about microblading and that made me want to get it done myself. I saw how it could not only fix the shape, symmetry, save me time, money and camouflage scars. I was like, yes sign me up! So that was it for me, I was hooked and knew that was what I wanted to do! I wanted to make other women feel great and encourage self-confidence with or without make up. My clients ask me why I chose brows to start with in the permanent makeup industry and I think it’s because brows are what I like to think to be the best accessories to your eyes and face. They really do make such a statement if shaped ideal to your face shape, and they show every expression for any occasion!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
What would the journey be like without some uphill battles. I definitely knew that taking on a new career later in life was going to be a challenge for sure. I was no longer just thinking about me, I had a family to consider and the unknown can be scary when you put a lot on the line. There comes a point in your life when you ask yourself is this worth the risk? I just knew that it had to be worth a shot and definitely better than the alternative. The thought of staying at a job that consumed me and kept me from feeling fulfilled for me was worth the risk! I had to leave the security of a not only an industry that I had invested in since I was 18 but to let go of a secured salary- that was HARD! We had just bought a house, and a month later I quit my job, researched local schools and enrolled into a course! I had to learn very quickly to spin lots of plates and make this business work. I didn’t allow myself to have a plan B because I thought that it would be giving myself an easy way out. So I just got to work, and then COVID19 hit literally six weeks after moving into my new studio space. I allowed myself to have a mini anxiety attack but then realized I had to pivot my business and work on more behind the scenes stuff. I continued to practice my craft (thank goodness for online trainings and YouTube). I just stayed a student and focused on building my business from the inside out, I guess you could say. I found peace in the chaos and beauty in the flaws of the year 2020 chapter of this journey.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in brow shaping as a permanent make-up artist in Georgetown, TX. I currently offer microblading, combination brows (combining two techniques; microblading and machine shading) and microshading/powder brows. I will be expanding by offering other services in the near future. I do also offer other non-invasive services such as the popular brow lamination and henna brows which is a form of brow tinting. These two services can really enhance naturally full brows and give a beautiful fluff to your natural brows. At this time, I would say I am most proud of building such wonderful relationships with my clients and the heart to just keep going despite the obstacles this past year brought. My main priority in my business has been and will always be my clients. It’s been fulfilling building a community of women from all walks of life. I think as I reflect, I realize I love building connections with people. I love finding something relatable with my clients, I enjoy giving them a space where they can just come and check out so to speak. There’s no small talk at my studio that’s for sure, I pride myself on making my clients feel welcomed and providing an experience from start to finish. I feel grateful to have the opportunity to make people feel beautiful about themselves, it sounds silly but it really is priceless to me.

What were you like growing up?
I am a small-town girl at heart, my family moved from Austin to Cedar Park and for the most part, I stayed here locally. I always thought I would grow up and move away but God had other plans and kept me here. Growing up, I was social but I also really liked science and performing arts courses. I was in choir for many years and enjoyed singing, I really love music and all genres! I have definitely always been a girly girl that’s for sure, I remember having to lay a towel on the floor so I wouldn’t get makeup on the carpet and sit on the floor with those long skinny mirrors and I would lean it on the wall and I would create my own “vanity” area. Applying make-up has always been therapeutic for me, and when I am working now during sessions, I find it to be the same for me. It’s calming and I play some music and allow myself to just focus on my craft. I think a lot of artists feel that feeling, you just are in your element and zone out everything else for those couple of hours.
