Rising Stars: Meet Yesenia Diaz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yesenia Diaz.

Hi Yesenia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My love for hair and makeup started back in 2000 in my high school years. I always would wake up at 5am before school to style my hair. From there, friends would ask me to do their hair as well. During that time, the twisties with colored rubber bands were in style. At my high school we didn’t have the cosmetology opportunity like they do now in high schools. I graduated high school in 2002. Right after high school, I became a single mother in 2003 at the age of 18 years old and let go of that dream of the beauty industry. Started working other jobs to support my son. In 2005 I had my second son With 2 boys never thought I would get back to what I enjoyed doing. Years passed and in 2009, I bumped in with an old high school friend at the store. She mentioned she was going to open her own beauty salon soon. She remembered how much I enjoyed doing hair and makeup and asked me to come work for her as a receptionist. That’s basically where I saw it more as my career and a new beginning for me. I worked for her for a while. I did work in other hair salons as well up north Austin. In 2017 I started taking makeup courses to freshen my techniques. In 2018 I became a single mother again of 5 boys. That same year I decided to go solo and register Flawless Studio as my business name. I promised myself I was not going to let my dream go again. In August of this year, I graduated from Sleeping Beauty Lash Institute and got my license as a lash extension technician. Had also the opportunity to be part of one of the vendors for the Quinceañera Expo in Kyle, Tx. this October. I continue to update my work by learning from other amazing and professional makeup artists I have worked with.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely been a rocky road. The biggest challenge in my career has been being a single mother of my 5 boys and being able to balance my business to support them financially and time for them. Not to miss their sports games, taking and picking up my oldest from work, and school events. But they are my inspiration. They are the reason why I keep pushing myself to do more. I wouldn’t want them to stop pursuing something they love doing, no matter how hard life gets.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a professional hairstylist and makeup artist for all special types of events. I don’t specialize myself in certain types of events, but with what I do, I realize that I get more clients for sweet 15. I believe it’s because the clients that come to me are looking for a more natural look for their daughters. I just think their beautiful skin doesn’t need so much coverage and doesn’t need so much makeup. I make my clients feel comfortable in their own beauty.

I’m most proud of the support and love I have gotten from my clients. Some have even adopted me as part of their family since I have known them for so long and have been there for every special event in their life.

What sets me apart from others, I would say my customer service. I always talk to my clients like I have known them for years when I just met them. Well, at least that’s what I have been told lots of times. Lol. How I make them feel comfortable around me and confident in their beauty. I would have said my work but I believe every hairstylist and makeup artist has a unique talent. Everyone works differently and has their own talent.

Right now I’m focused on expanding my business bringing my services and traveling to other states. I’m currently taking other courses to learn and improve my techniques to give the best of me to my clients.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think any person who decides to start a business on their own is definitely the definition of a risk taker. It’s not easy to survive in this economy nowadays. Especially after surviving with a business with covid around. That includes myself. I had to get another job for a while when covid started till the beginning of this year. I didn’t stop my business either but my business had come down a lot. I know a few makeup artists who completely stopped their business because of covid and I’m sure they’re not the only ones.
