We’re looking forward to introducing you to Vanessa Joy. Check out our conversation below.
Vanessa, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes — because I’ve built the kind of business most photographers dream of, and I show how to do it without burning out.”
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Vanessa Joy. I’m a photographer, educator, and mentor who’s spent over 20 years building multiple seven-figure photography businesses — from luxury weddings across the globe to corporate campaigns with brands like Canon, Adorama, and Fortune 500 companies. Along the way, I’ve also raised a family and navigated the ups and downs of running a creative business in a male-dominated industry.
What makes my work unique is that I don’t just focus on the art side of photography — I specialize in helping other photographers turn their talent into profit through my mastermind, workshops, and digital products. My mission is to shatter the “starving artist” myth and equip photographers with timeless strategies to build sustainable, legacy-driven businesses that support both their financial goals and their personal lives.
Right now, I’m especially excited about growing my Photo Insiders Mastermind, where I mentor photographers who are ready to scale their businesses, raise their prices with confidence, and finally step into the role of CEO instead of “just another photographer.”
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
“Becoming a mom completely reshaped how I see the world. It taught me that success isn’t just about career milestones, but about building something that allows you to be present for your family and still create impact. That balance drives everything I do today.”
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
“Absolutely. I nearly gave up when I realized I was trading all my time for too little money. The turning point was deciding I’d rather build a business on my terms than stay stuck in someone else’s version of ‘success.’”
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
“Absolutely. I’m an open book because I believe vulnerability is a superpower in business. What you see publicly — the wins, the hard lessons, the messy days with two kids and a camera bag — is how I teach; I lead with honesty so others don’t have to learn the same expensive lessons alone.”
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
“They’d miss the frameworks and the wake-up calls. My students don’t just get inspiration — they get repeatable systems, tough love on mindset, and a community that actually moves the needle on profit and freedom.”
