Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherrell Green.
Hi Sherrell, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
By the way, I’m originally from New Orleans, LA. I come from a family where we didn’t travel much unless we evacuated for a hurricane. Hurricane Katrina was what brought my family and me here to Texas. But we didn’t travel much outside that or go to Biloxi, MS, for a quick weekend trip. So traveling internationally was never heard of, even in my community. The first time I ever flew on a plane was when I was a senior in high school going to NYC! It was amazing! Although I have been dying to get back out there to experience it as an adult, I remember how exciting it was then. It was supposed to be like a mini HBCU Tour where we visited some Colleges like Howard & Morgan State, but we ended up just visiting Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn. But just that experience of flying on a plane to see something different outside New Orleans, I knew that traveling the world would be my destiny.
Years went on, I went off to college and started working in my career field (IT Help Desk), and just the everyday hustle and bustle of life wasn’t enough! I wanted more from working in a cubicle for 40+ hours a week, and at that time, I was living in Dallas and was ready to see something different. So I ended up working for an aviation company doing IT work. That first year, they had me living out of a suitcase! I was in cities all over the US, like Connecticut, Florida, Philly, Kentucky, Georgia, etc. Once the traveling portion of the job stopped and I had to come to the office instead, I became bored again. I stayed at that company until I finished my degree and decided to move to China to teach English.
Moving to China was an emotional rollercoaster and was very short-lived! It didn’t go as planned, and I was there for like a month and was back in New Orleans before you knew it. Going to China made me realize how huge the world is and how everyone, especially from my community, should go and experience it for themselves. After China, I took a few domestic trips and met my business partner; from there, the Afro Traveller brand was created. I mainly show ways to save on travel and share my different experiences when going to different places. I also love supporting and giving many Black Owned Businesses a platform in those destinations. I’m currently working on getting a team of travel agents/bloggers who would like to help me host a few travel group trips across the globe.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
Nothing in life is easy in my eyes. It’s been many bumps in the road for sure! The main one was during the pandemic! It was hard to promote anything travel related because the entire world was shut down. And when it opened back up, there were so many restrictions that it became a bit difficult for some to travel.
Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
I have always had jobs in Customer Service, but my career field is IT Support which I did for over 10 years with multiple companies. I’m currently a certified TEFL Teacher, where I can teach English as a second language, and Apple Technician Certified, where I repair iPhone Models, including iPads. I was previously certified as a Google and Samsung Technician as well. I’m working as an Apple Technician contractor and working with locally Black Owned Businesses with Social Media Marketing Support. And then I have my baby, my Travel Agency, “The Afro Traveller,” where I help my clients book their dream vacations under any budget. I opened the doors to my business in Feb. 2019 and have been happy with the progress of how much it has grown over the years. This year, I will be focusing on curated group trips, and I’m currently looking for any business-minded individuals that would love to be a part of my team. If you are interested, make sure you are following me on all platforms to keep up with the trip or learn how to take part in joining the team. Including my agency, I have a blog and travel gear and accessories that are online for sale. So make sure to check out and purchase some items at theafrotraveller.com. I’m very proud of all my experiences and accomplishments. I have come a very long way and had many obstacles. But I’m very dedicated, so if I really want it, I’m doing everything I can to get it. What sets me apart from others is how much of a people person I am. The way the world changes, many people forget how to build relationships and rapport, and I do that with everyone I come across.
We love to hear about your fond memories from growing up.
I was close to my grandparents. My grandmother would take us on many adventures around New Orleans, from visiting the French Market on the weekends to spending a day at City Park with some Krystal Burgers that she would buy from a donut shop nearby. I have many of those happy memories with them as a kid. I truly think that’s what made me become the adventurous person I am today.
