Today we’d like to introduce you to Justice Phillips.
Hi Justice, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started playing guitar when I was 11 and fell in love with it. I quickly became obsessed with practicing, and when Austin Classical Guitar set up a classical guitar program in my middle school when I was in 6th grade, that gave me the structure I needed to focus on becoming a musician. From there, I went to McCallum Fine Arts Academy and then UT to study Music Composition and Classical Guitar, and then I came full circle as I now work full time at Austin Classical Guitar as Director of Customer Experience.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As any artist, athlete, or really any skill-based path it’s not always easy. There are moments of self-doubt. One of those moments for me was when I started auditioning for schools and hearing other kids who were also really really good. I had always been the best guitar player I knew so that was a shock, and then that got exacerbated in college.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a composer, that is my number one passion and what I identify as artistically. I’ve had the fortune of writing for some of the best classical guitarists on the planet, such as Jorge Caballero. That is probably what I’m most proud of. That and how far my compositions have come since I was in college. It makes me excited for what my compositions will sound like in the future. I believe my music does things harmonically that hasn’t really been explored to extensively on the guitar.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was an energetic, rambunctious, and talkative kid. But, everyone thought I was nice and good-hearted which I think I was. But, I got in trouble pretty often when I was a kid. I loved video games when I was younger, I still do. I also loved and still love football and of course music.
