An Inspired Chat with Kiernan Rien & Blaine Bowers

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kiernan Rien & Blaine Bowers. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Kiernan & Blaine, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of Blue Cape Digital, my business partner and good friend Blaine and I started Comfy Fur Life, an Austin-based apparel brand that’s become a fun, creative outlet for both of us. It’s our way of combining art with our love for animals. We donate 3% of every purchase to no-kill shelters, and for special partner collaborations, 100% of the proceeds. It’s a passion project that brings us joy and gives back in a meaningful way.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Kiernan, Founder and Digital Strategist at Blue Cape Digital. My business partner Blaine is our Senior Visual Designer. Together, we run a small studio in Austin that helps both service-based and product-based businesses grow with high-performing websites, smart advertising, and thoughtful design.

We work across industries including law, finance, education, wellness, and retail. Our focus is on clarity, strong results, and creative that drives real impact. We’re also exploring how AI can streamline processes and support smarter strategy for our clients.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Kiernan: I think what breaks bonds between people is not showing up when it matters most. What restores them is accountability and vulnerability. It’s about showing up, owning your part, and being willing to say, “I was wrong.”
In business, that can look like pretending you have all the answers instead of being honest and willing to figure things out together. Stay open to learning, and growth will follow.

Blaine: What breaks bonds? Usually a lack of communication. People stop talking, start assuming, or avoid the hard conversations. What restores them is the opposite: honest, direct, human conversation. That’s true in life, and it’s true in creative work. Talk it out. It changes everything.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Kiernan: If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be this: You don’t have to wear your shirt in the pool. You’re a little insecure right now, but keep being yourself, work hard, aim high, and you’ll be just fine. I’ve got your back.

Blaine: You don’t have to have it all figured out. Let people in, even when it feels easier to keep things close. Being open won’t make you weaker. It will actually make you stronger, more connected, and more human.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One lie is that data should drive everything. Data matters, but it’s not the whole story. Creative instinct, cultural awareness, and emotional intelligence matter just as much. The best work happens when insight meets intuition.

Another lie is that “anyone can do it.” Templates and AI tools make design easier to access, which is great, but strategy, taste, and skill still count. Knowing how to design isn’t the same as knowing why it works.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
Kiernan: I feel most at peace when I’m playing drums, riding my bike, learning something new, spending time with loved ones, and my taxes are done.

Blaine: I feel most at peace when I’m outside. Give me some sun, a breeze, and the quiet company of plants, rocks, bugs, and animals. That mix of stillness and aliveness resets everything for me.
