An Inspired Chat with Lara Grosso of SOUTH Austin

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lara Grosso. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Lara, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first thing I do when I get up is put all my dogs outside and start feeding my small zoo. I have 3 dogs (2 Dachshunds, 1 Pit Bull mix), 1 guinea pig, 1 parakeet, and 1 Tortie Point Siamese. All my babies are spoiled and loved. My babies eat better than I do, and I am happy about that. After they are situated and taken care of, I will make my mom breakfast and make sure she is good for the day. Then I help my sister and dad take care of anything that needs to be done before I go to work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Well, I am from Austin, Texas, born and raised. I like to think outside the box and follow my own rules. When people tell me I can’t, you already know I am finding out how I can. I love designing shoes, shirts, and hats. I started designing shoes and shirts pre-COVID, but I stopped because of personal reasons. I am big on taking care of my family and the people closest to me.

I am someone that loves being different always will take a chance when the opportunity presents itself.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was someone who was scared of doing anything and didn’t take risks. If someone said something negative, I let it get to my already bad mentality. I didn’t take criticism well and also tried to be a people pleaser. As years went by, I started realizing you can’t make everyone happy and being a “yes” person was not worth it.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
The first time I wanted to give up, I was 18, and my self-esteem was pretty low; I didn’t think anything was possible. It just felt like I was going through the motions, and that was all there was. I was in a dark spot for a while and didn’t think I would ever get out of it.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I am living unapologetically me. I don’t care what others think or say about me. At the end of the day, I know the truth and how my life story goes. I will not be fake because someone wants me to. Being fake is exhausting and not ideal for anyone.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
When I am in the kitchen making a new recipe, I love discovering new things and trying them out. If I find a recipe I have never made, I will make it and then tweak it to my liking. The fun comes from learning new things and expanding your knowledge. My mom, sister, and dad are my biggest critics. I love getting feedback from them and growing from it.
