We recently had the chance to connect with Melissa Engleman and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day is a lot of wrangling animals. I wake up and let one dog outside give pets to the other dog walk the outside cat through the house to the laundry room. I’m allergic to cats. I make coffee. I listen to comedy. I get bones for the dogs. I make a too-long list of things to do. I write in my journal. This morning I took picture of three lizards that are living outside. Try to listen to a meditation and do some kind of exercise.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My superpower is making things sound sad. My genre is dreamy/haunting alt-country that makes you ugly-cry but also wraps you up in a blanket and gives you a cup of hot cocoa. Music is where I can be my most honest and vulnerable and I hope it makes space for that for others as well. I’ve been playing music in public for more than 15 years. I put out my debut studio album last year and am in the process of making a Christmas record for release in 2026.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My mom often worked two jobs when I was growing up. She would take classes and educate herself in order to get better jobs and better provide for us. She grew up in a time when father’s often wanted their daughters to marry rather than go to college. She taught me a lot about valuing my education and financial independence. All of her hard work allowed me many opportunities that she did not have herself.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
“You have so much going for you, don’t let anyone make you feel otherwise.” I think I had a hard time seeing my strengths and spent many years feeling not good enough.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Kindness toward others, being a good friend, loyalty, music, songwriting, making the world a better place, equality, my sweet doggies, my family and mac and cheese.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m close to the ocean, when I’m working on things I believe in, when I’m hanging out with my dogs and when I’m seeing live music!
