Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Goodspeed
Hi Allie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been enchanted by photography, especially the way a frozen image can capture emotion in such detail. Black and white images, in particular, have always fascinated me. Stripping away the color leaves only the raw, unfiltered feeling of the moment. This love for capturing authentic emotions set the stage for my eventual career in photography.
Before becoming a full-time photographer, I lived many different lives. I began my professional career as an elementary school teacher, then transitioned to a customer service representative, followed by a role as a corporate trainer. Each of these jobs provided valuable life skills that have shaped me into the photographer I am today. Teaching taught me patience and how to coach couples into comfortable, natural poses. My customer service experience honed my client relations skills, setting me apart in the photography industry. As a corporate trainer, I developed organizational and strategic skills, learning to plan for the future of my business and continuously invest in my education as a photographer.
In 2020, amid the pandemic, I picked up a cheap DSLR camera and began teaching myself how to use it. On New Year’s Eve of 2020, my husband and I set personal goals, and I decided to turn my passion for photography into a full-time career. I started shooting as much as possible, often for free, and invested in education to improve my craft.
As time went on, my business began to grow, and I discovered my passion for wedding photography. It became clear that I was juggling two full-time jobs. After much thought and prayer, I decided to take the leap and became a full-time wedding photographer in June of 2024.
As a wedding photographer, I have had the pleasure of having a front-row seat to couples’ best days, and I genuinely love it. I feel as though I have found my true calling, and I can’t wait to continue celebrating my couples’ wedding days for years to come. I’m just getting started!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve certainly faced struggles, as anyone does when stepping out on their own. My biggest challenge, and one I actively work on, is avoiding the comparison game.
Wedding photography can feel like a very saturated market, especially in Austin where there’s no shortage of incredible talent. It’s easy to get down on yourself and compare your skills to others. I’m learning to take inspiration and creativity from my fellow photographers rather than letting negative thoughts creep in. Shifting my mindset has been crucial, and I’m grateful for all the industry giants I’ve learned from.
Each day, I start by journaling three things I’m grateful for. It might sound simple, but this practice sets a positive tone for my day, helping me approach each challenge with gratitude.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m Allie, a wedding photographer based in Austin, Texas. While I’ve had the privilege of shooting weddings across the country, I’m especially excited to shoot my first international wedding next year in Lake Como, Italy!
Photos shape your memories for a lifetime, so it’s essential to have images that truly reflect the authenticity of your wedding day. I specialize in creating timeless portraits that you’ll want to hang on your walls, turn into holiday cards, and share with loved ones. At the same time, I capture candid, real, and raw emotions from your special day. It’s the best of both worlds.
Choosing a wedding photographer can be stressful, but I’m here to make it easier. If you’re looking for a photographer who makes you feel natural in front of the camera, creates both candid and editorial images, guides you comfortably through posing, and produces glowy, true-to-color photos, then I might be your perfect match.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Never underestimate the power of sending a direct message to someone you admire. I’ve reached out to several photographers I look up to, asking to chat over coffee or offering to second shoot for them at their next wedding.
Putting yourself out there can be challenging, but the worst that can happen is getting a no. Most people are willing to help, and the payoff of connecting with others in the industry is priceless.
If you’re a wedding photographer or just starting your photography career, feel free to reach out to me. I’m always looking to connect with other local photographers!
