Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Boyce.
Brian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
B Flat Dueling Pianos was founded in 2022 after beginning performances under different names in 2021. Created by myself, with support from my wife Kori Boyce, and help from friends Sean Robertson, and Michael Carrandi, the company was built on the idea of making live music more personal and meaningful for both musicians while presenting professional for all different audiences.
The idea for B Flat grew during the pandemic, when I noticed a disconnect between large nationwide entertainment companies, their musicians, and their clients. I envisioned a small, family-style business that would close that gap by focusing on connection, flexibility, and quality. That vision became reality when B Flat launched to provide dueling pianos for events in Austin, TX, setting a new standard for how live shows could be both professional and inviting.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
With every business there are always growing pains of course and we have had our fair share but I feel like I have been pretty blessed with how we have been to this point. At this moment in time, I don’t have aspirations of making the company so big that I can’t individually connect or impact my team on a weekly/monthly basis. Of course I want B Flat Dueling Pianos to expand and grow, but I want that to be natural and work to continue to build this community of players more from what we already have. Not to mention there are long term goals we want to achieve but those are still in very early planning stages.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve always been involved in music no matter where my life took me or what it looks like. I have played music or sang since I was 3 or 4 years old and I have been a full time musician since 18. When I graduated high school I committed my life to music. Nno matter what I earned income through it would be involving music. I have a B.F.A in Fine Arts from UTA in Arlington TX and have spent many years in theatres, dance studios, recording spaces, and performing live all over the region and country. I have led worship both as a paid leader or musician as well as volunteered at local churches/assisted living homes to share music with everyone willing to listen. Music and creatively working to support my family has been a dream come true.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I think you can learn something from everyone. When you devote your time and effort into something you will find what you need. I know it sounds a little silly or like a hallmark story but I have had mentors in almost every place I have lived in or worked with. The best lessons I have learned, when they haven’t come from practice and repetition, have come through genuine connection and coincidence. If you know where to look and can open up to people, the right people will find you.
I heard someone say the other day that truly the only two things that matter are attitude and effort. If it is a sport, a relationship, a dream, or a life goal, those things will keep you on the right through line. Effort to drive you to your destination, and attitude to keep you looking forward and upward. Even before I heard that sentiment, I find those have been the best mentors to me through my life.
