Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrin Mcalister.
Hi Darrin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had creative ideas in my head and a passion for anime, gaming, and cosplay. I’ve just never had a way to express that in the beginning. I’ve been an avid gamer since I was about 5 years old. I’ve played everything under the sun, from Crash Bandicoot to Super Mario and MegaMan. As far as anime, I was watching it before I even knew what or where it came from. SO when the digital age came about, I had seen other people making their strides and posting content online as well, so I wanted to put my hat into the ring. I started slowly by getting tips from other creators on how to do it, slowly but surely. Streaming and gaming were an easier first step for me, but I was always concerned about being entertaining enough for an online audience coming to watch me play video games. I started around 2020 during COVID, when most people were in the house and locked indoors. I had purchased a MacBook and a capture card as recommended by one of my best friends. I put that fear to the side and began streaming. Little by little, as my followers grew, I became more confident in myself as well as my content and began to expand on my equipment and how I operate on my channel, as well as the content, including relatable content, cosplay jokes, and gaming-related content. I’ve still got a long way to go before I reach the heights I’ve set and expected for myself, but as long as the support is genuine and the people love me, I’ll reach that someday.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest struggles with the content and streaming process are with social media. Sometimes the algorithm decides to show you off to your friends; other times, you’re on the front page. It’s really staying consistent with posting and staying within your niche that’ll bring the right attention your way. I’ve met some of the most amazing people on this journey. My other biggest struggles are the economy and the price of creating. As technology grows and expands, so does the cost of the equipment needed to do these tasks. Recording and streaming require efficient tech that doesn’t give out after a couple of uses. Building my Pc was one of my best investments in this business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in gaming, streaming, anime, and cosplay-related content. I’m mostly known for my Twitch channel as well as my content on social media. I’m most proud of my edited cosplay photos that were outfitted, shot, and edited by me as well as some help from my girlfriend. I’ve also created a merch line of anime/gaming based original designs that I’ve wanted sold here and there to mutuals and friends. It’s a work in progress, but I want it to grow into something even bigger. I’m also most proud of my gaming channel, which I’ve amassed over 1000 followers from my hard work, dedication, and perseverance. It’s literally my baby; I’ve grown from the ground up through gaming, collaboration, and being my genuine self online. What sets me apart is that the same one you see on the sticks gaming is always the same person when the screen goes black, and we’re not online.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Hmmmmm…I’ve been reading The Art of War lately, and It’s a very interesting piece. I also watch my peers’ and mutuals’ content as well for tips, advice, and resources that can make my content grow in quality and efficiency on social media.
