Today we’d like to introduce you to Douglas Hindelang.
Hi Douglas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I moved into the Sandy Harbor neighborhood outside Horseshoe Bay, Texas in 2013. It is a very close knit community consisting of about 110 residences around Lake LBJ. I became involved with the volunteer fire department in 2014 and became President of the Board in 2015. As President of the Board, my primary duty is to steer our strategic vision and ensure our volunteer firefighters have the infrastructure and equipment they need to safely protect our community. However, the true engine behind our success is our dedicated board. We have been successful in fund raising, donations, and procuring grants. Over the past 11 years, this collaborative leadership and financial accomplishments has transformed our department—expanding our fleet from two trucks to five, adding a critical new truck bay building, installing a dedicated water storage tank for faster fire suppression, and completely remodeling the main fire hall community center. By prioritizing both operational growth and community spaces, we have also been able to bolster our ranks, growing our volunteer firefighter force from 6 to 12 active members. The real value to our community lies in this shared commitment: through proactive teamwork, we have built a faster, better-equipped, and more resilient emergency response system that will safeguard our neighbors for years to come.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Actually the support we have received from the communty has been phenomenal. They have provided funds and free labor to accomplish all the improvements we have done over the years. For the size of our community, the talent here has been amazing and always willing to help.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have had a variety of work experience over the years. I was a business owner for about 20 years from 1972 to 1992 in Austin, Texas. I ran a mechanic shop before finally landing a job in the water meter shop for the City of Austin. I retired from that position in 2013.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I constantly listen to audiobooks. I find them entertaining and valueable.
