Check Out Fatima Bani Zamani’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fatima Bani Zamani.

Hi Fatima, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into photography didn’t start with a camera, but with a screwdriver. As a child, I was relentlessly curious. I would take all my toys apart, not to break them, but to understand their inner workings, to see how the pieces fit together to create something functional.
As I grew older, that analytical curiosity met a new passion: art. I got into painting and design, but the ‘technical’ side of me was still seeking a home. That home turned out to be the world of digital editing. Long before I became a professional photographer, I would spend countless hours lost in editing software, fascinated by how a few adjustments could transform the entire soul of an image.
Interestingly, when it came time for university, I studied Business Administration and spent some time working in that field. While I gained valuable professional experience during those years, I always felt a pull toward my creative roots. My true transformation happened when I was expecting my first son. I bought my first professional camera with a simple goal: to document his life. I quickly realized that the camera itself was a whole new, fascinating world for me to explore, though, thankfully, I decided not to use a screwdriver on this one!
In fact, my two boys were my very first models. Their ‘modeling careers’ actually started before they were even born, right from my own maternity photos! Capturing their lives became the perfect combination of my two worlds. The act of taking a photo satisfied my artistic side, while the detailed process of post-processing satisfied my lifelong need to understand ‘how it works.’
For several years, while raising the boys at home, I focused my lens on Still Life and Commercial photography. It was a period of intense growth where I learned to control light and composition in a studio-like environment. However, as my children grew and my world expanded, so did my portfolio. I began to crave the energy of human connection and the beauty of natural moments.
This led me to where I am today: a freelance photographer deeply rooted in the Leander and greater Austin community. I specialize in documentary and lifestyle photography, focusing on family milestones, corporate events, and couple sessions. Getting to document the authentic, beautiful stories of the families and businesses in our local area has been incredibly rewarding. This is also where my business background finally came full circle, giving me the tools I needed to build and manage my own brand, The One Photo. Of course, this journey wouldn’t have been possible without my husband. His support and constant encouragement over the years gave me the confidence to turn my curiosity and passion into a true profession.
I’ve moved from taking toys apart to capturing the delicate, beautiful pieces that make up a human story. I’m not just taking a photo; I’m still looking for those little things that make a moment feel alive.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. It’s been an amazing journey, but definitely not a straight line.
When people think about the challenges of starting a photography business, they usually think about the technical aspects or the logistics of building a brand. While those take a lot of work, my biggest struggle was actually internal.
Finding my true artistic voice required a tremendous amount of deep inner work. It was a journey of self-discovery that was often just as painful as it was fascinating. To get to a place where I could authentically capture the raw, unscripted moments of others, I first had to strip away my own expectations and unlearn old habits. It took a lot of vulnerability and resilience to confront my own insecurities and truly grow into the person and the artist I wanted to be.
Embracing documentary and lifestyle photography means you have to be comfortable with imperfection—both in the moments you capture and within yourself. That mindset shift didn’t happen overnight. It was a challenging process of personal growth, but looking back, those growing pains were absolutely essential. They didn’t just make me a better photographer; they gave my work the depth, empathy, and soul it needed.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the founder and lead photographer of The One Photo, specializing in documentary and lifestyle photography for family milestones, couple sessions, and corporate events across the Austin area.
I am most known for my artistic eye, my visual storytelling, and perhaps most importantly, my patience. I believe patience is the absolute key to capturing authentic, candid moments. Rather than focusing on stiff, traditional poses, I look for the in-between moments, the genuine laughs, the quiet connections, and the raw emotions. I want my clients to look at their photos years from now and remember exactly how they felt in that moment, not just how they looked.
What I am most proud of is the environment I create during a session. Being in front of a camera can be awkward, but I pride myself on making my clients feel entirely comfortable, safe, and seen. When people are relaxed, their true personalities shine through, and that is when the real magic happens.
What sets me apart from others is the two sides of my approach: the combination of my artistic empathy and my deep technical curiosity. During a shoot, I am fully present, focusing on human connection and light. But once the session is over, my analytical side takes over. I pour my heart into the post-production and editing process, using advanced technical skills to elevate each image and bring out its unique soul.
Additionally, my background in business administration sets me apart by ensuring a smooth and easy client experience. I understand that delivering beautiful art is only half the job; providing a highly professional, organized, and communicative process from the first inquiry to the final gallery delivery is just as important. At The One Photo, clients get the best of both worlds: a passionate artist and a reliable professional.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
To me, risk-taking is about vulnerability and the courage to bet on yourself.
Transitioning from a structured business background and even from the highly controlled environment of my early still-life photography, to documenting real, unpredictable human moments was terrifying. When you are an artist, your work is an extension of who you are. Putting my art out into the world and asking clients to trust me with their most precious family milestones and events required a huge leap of faith. It meant leaving my comfort zone completely behind.
There were definitely moments of doubt, especially while balancing this new venture with raising my two boys. But I eventually realized that staying in my comfort zone was actually the biggest risk of all, because it meant risking my true passion and ignoring my creative calling.
My perspective on risk is that it is the absolute requirement for being true to yourself and growing. You cannot find your true artistic voice, nor can you build deep, meaningful connections with your clients, without taking the risk of being vulnerable and showing up exactly as you are. Taking that leap was scary, but it is exactly what allowed me to turn my lifelong curiosity into a deeply fulfilling career.
