Today we’d like to introduce you to Judy Medina.
Hi Judy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started teaching CPR completely by accident. After spending almost 15 years in Human Resources, I left the workforce to be a stay at home mom to my then four year old. I felt so lucky to be able to stay home, but after a few years, I really wanted to rejoin the working world. It seems as though being a stay at home for a few years negates all those years of experience and I was only being offered entry-level positions. A friend who ran her own childcare business had started teaching CPR and suggested that based on my experience in training, it might be a good fit for me. She lent me her equipment and connected me with all the childcare providers she knew. My first class only had two people, but I gave it my all and word of mouth spread and classes started growing. For the last seven years, I have been lucky to teach so many people a life-saving skill and truly love what I do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Starting off was hard. Small classes and high startup costs meant it took almost a year to turn a profit. Learning to be a one woman show. Creating my own website and marketing materials because I couldn’t afford to pay anyone to make them. During COVID, my classes dropped significantly. I love teaching so I decided to teach classes more often, but with less students. There were days I taught classes of one in 2020.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I own EZ CPR and teach CPR, First Aid, and Babysitting Training to people who are in healthcare, those who work with children, and anyone who wants to learn life-saving skills. My motto is if you walk out of my class, I would trust you with my own child that you’d be able to give them CPR properly. I’m also proud of the fact that I have taught teens and pre teens the essentials of babysitting and offered it to the community for free. I’m a strong believer in giving back to the community as not everyone can afford to take a class. Being bilingual, I’m able to teach classes in Spanish as well.
Any big plans?
The plans for the future is to continue growing my business and eventually mentor others who may want to teach CPR as well. Looking forward to participating in Baby Day 2022 presented by the first three years of Texas where I will teach CPR for infants and children virtually to parents across the state of Texas.
