Today we’d like to introduce you to Lia Bermudez.
Hi Lia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always felt like the best job for me involved helping people. After undergrad, I had a 6-year detour into emergency medicine, and while I worked on the ambulance I started graduate school. It was invaluable experience as I cared for countless people in crisis. I began counseling clients in May of 2020, right as the pandemic was ramping up. I graduated in December of 2020 and continued working at the same group practice, continuing to develop my counseling skills and find my niche. I found a great love in working with couples, figuring out relational dynamics and helping with conflict management. I decided to launch my own private practice late last year, officially opening my doors in January of 2025. I have since been finding my way through the Wild West of running a business!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Going into private practice felt like a feasible leap, but learning marketing and making myself visible as a small business has had a massive learning curve.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a licensed professional counselor specializing in couples therapy. I am Level-2 trained in the Gottman Method, which I have found to be an effective tool in working with couples. People have often commented on my gentleness, strong compassion, and willingness to make them comfortable in an inherently uncomfortable process. I also take pride in my authenticity and use of humor. I refuse to show up as anyone other than myself or to make empty promises to clients.
My background is in Christian counseling, and I enjoy incorporating this worldview with folks who find it helpful. It adds a significant dimension of “why” behind the “how” of improving and repairing marriages.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Gather all the information you can from those who have walked the road before you! Ask what their pitfalls were, what they love and what they don’t love about running a small business. If you’re a counselor, remember to stay in consultation with others in order to stay sharp! Also, NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK.
