Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Beaver.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I always had an interest in music but was very shy so it wasn’t until I was 19 or so I started to be a musician. I went off to music college around the age of 21 after attending local jams in town. I attended school as drummer but I had always been a singer first. I finished my studies with a bachelor degree in drums and composition but I sang throughout much of school to compete melodic exams etc. when I graduated, I put together my first band and toured with them for about six years, writing the songs and singing/drumming as the bandleader. Did some booking for us with other members of the band. We opened for Jimmie Vaughan while in Canada and he told me about how I might love Austin. I came and did a record here and loved it so much I got work visas and began to split my time off the road between Canada and Austin. My band broke up and I started going out on my own. Booking everything. Leading everything and signing with Alligator Records. I also at that time started working with my now my musical (and life partner) guitarist Bradley Stivers and we have a band together where I have come off the drums and singing and now front and play guitar with him. After some years here, we play almost every night of the week at some of the favorite spots in town. We released a record in September and are working towards another in the next year or so.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, no it hasn’t been smooth for sure. I went through a lot of personal issues for most of the years I was with first my band. I was in a very toxic relationship one of the band members and struggled to find my own sense of worth on a personal level. Also, Being a woman in a leadership role is often difficult because being taken seriously can be a real fight as a bandleader, musician and booker (even though I have booked myself in 15 different countries and kept myself touring for about 200 days a year for a number of years pre covid).
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a musician and songwriter. I’m mostly proud of the fact that I get to play music for a living. And that be my only job. It’s been over a decade of doing this and being majorly self-sufficient. I have never had a manager or booking agent and I’ve toured and played locally for many years. I’m also very proud of the fact that I have become proficient enough to play gigs on multiple instruments (guitar, drums, singing). I’ve always loved music more than the specific instruments you use to perform the music. So I feel very proud of the fact that I can have more than one way to express the music I want to create.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
My life is sort of odd in a way. I’ve not really had a normal job (whatever that is) since I was about 22. So what I would say is I believe anything is possible if you really try. A lot of people in my life have said that music isn’t a job or perhaps I should do something “real” but it’s been more than a decade of performing music for a living and before that, I put myself through music school. I may not be rich I make enough to pay my bills and do what I love. I worked for every cent I’ve earned. I had no handouts or help financially. If I can do it, anyone can. My love for what I do drives me and I believe anyone can do the same.
