Hi MyBrothaVan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I didn’t choose to be a public performer, it seemed to choose me. I began making music later than most due to my athletic career being over. I was inspired by artist who were a jack of all trades so I decided to buy home studio equipment and started making making beats and recording myself as a new hobby/outlet.
But my coworkers saw a talent in me and pushed me to join their collective. And after a couple of months of working with them I decided to commit to pursue making music independently back in 2017. Although i took 2 years off from 2022 to 2024, Ive been blessed to touch over 100 stages most notably opening for Juvenile at the Pensacola Vinyl Music Hall this last July.
I do also want to highlight not just my individual successes but I also have been able to build a community through meet ups, collabs, and events branded FTC which means several things. For the clan, For the community, and For the culture. My current mission is to use my gifts not just for my own outlet and personal accomplishments, but to create a platform that promotes original art, that makes space for the talented but neglect artist in the gulfcoast, and broading the perception of what artist (especially black artist) can do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh hell no it hasn’t been smooth at all lol. This journey added stress on my relationships, took time away from my friends and familiy, took thousands of my money investing into myself. My mental was challenged due to the countless rejection and neglect ive received from fans, as well as music institutions. I know im crazy as hell for still trying to build this career.
I recently was injured and lost alot of momentum I was building up. I also was booed at a sold out show and lets just say that was tough to swallow.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I perform, produce, record my original music. I also organize events for my local community. I am known for brining original music and creating my own lane. The catalog is more vast than most DIY, independent artist so I am know to be one of the most free artist you might find and also quite experimental.
I am most proud of building community and using my artist gift for a cause bigger than myself. Bringing ppl from all walks of life together. And i am also proud of my consistency and resiliency. Because I slow down at time but I never quit.
What sets me apart from others has to be a couple things. My openness to try new things and work with new ppl. My desire to help and highlight others, and my boldness to express my art in a way no one we know has done before. I am proud to pioneer progression as well as connecting ppl local as some sort of bridge between numerous groups/worlds.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
favorite is hard to say but one of my favorite memories is when i was in a gifted program. they made us play a class chess tournament. I had never played really and was sure i wasn’t able to do well because of that. Fortunately luck was on my side that day and I won and as a reward i was given a cookie that til this day is one of my favorites.
