Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Beale Canseco
Hi Nancy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out photographing weddings in Chicago and grew my studio to a large team of photographers and videographers over 16 years. During the pandemic, while rescheduling over 100 weddings for my business, my husband and I decided to move closer to family in Texas and I decided to open a new studio and shift my focus to portraiture. I realized as I was photographing more families and helping businesses with their branding photos, how many women hated being in front of the camera and didn’t feel confident in how they looked. I launched the Empowered Portrait Experience as a result of that and started catering more to women who needed a refresh in how they saw themselves.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has had its challenges; moving to a new market was a lot more difficult than I anticipated and I really had to work quite hard to create my network. In addition to that, I became a mother and had to navigate that balance between work and mom life which was a very new experience for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer and I am known for my ability to capture moments and authentic portraits. Even with my studio portraits, I capture emotion. I am very good at photographing people in their best light while remaining to true to who they are.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Don’t dwell on the mistakes you make in business. I have made so many mistakes and that’s part of being a business owner. Learn from them, move on and try to not to repeat them. Take ownership of your wins and don’t be so hard on yourself.
