Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Sanders.

Hi Natalie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Natalie Lepore, also known as “Ms. Girl6,” is a prominent figure in Austin’s ballroom scene and the Legendary Mother of the House of Lepore. She co-founded the house in San Antonio alongside BabiBoi, bringing it to Austin to foster a vibrant, inclusive space for queer, BIPOC, and trans communities.

Under her leadership, the House of Lepore has become a cornerstone of Austin’s nightlife, known for hosting events that blend fashion, performance, and activism. Notably, they organized the first official ballroom event at South by Southwest (SXSW), the “Big-Stage Ball,” which featured live music and a full-on ballroom competition.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some of the obstacles and challenges that we’ve faced, is numerous bills being proposed by the government. The queer/trans community has been terrified over these past couple of years. Our very existence us threaten to be erase.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Natalie organizes events that showcase ballroom culture, unite LGBTQIA+ individuals, and support queer Texans. In 2020, she was the first trans person to lead a march to the Texas Capitol for the Trans Pride & Black Lives Matter movement with 1,500 participants. The House of Lepore has been instrumental in introducing ballroom culture to the festival, making history with the first South by Southwest Ball in March 2021. When not performing or hosting, Natalie is a full-time social worker, aiding clients living with HIV. She has also taught dance classes at University of Texas.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I found my mentor during the pandemic. My brother Rocky Lane showed me how to be resilient, and to stand up for the community as well as myself. We know each other for years, and I respect his work and him as a person.

I don’t think you can search for a “mentor”, it has to be a genuine connection and someone who aligns with your path.
