Today we’d like to introduce you to Susana Ramirez
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grown up in a City in Mexico called Monterrey In the Nuevo León state, I studied animation and digital media which led me to work in professional video productions and made me discover my passion for photography, I started to shoot big festivals in Mexico until I got a job that send me international to festivals like ACL and SXSW in 2014 that’s how I meet Orion from Peligrosa and We started to work together overseas. I had a really bad break up so Orion invited me to work with them in a tour Peligrosa did around California, which led me to join the crew, and eventually made me move to Austin. I used to work in festivals in Mexico but I needed to find a job in Austin and it was starting to be hard so Orion suggested me to start djing so between him and Manny Dojo teach me how to DJ. I started doing small gigs like markets and South Congress lobby, until I got invited to Dj at Hotel Vegas in 2019 where I would dj in a small room for probably not more than 60 people. I would play reggaeton and music from my hometown, and that started to become a thing in such an extent that they had to move the dj booth to a bigger area. That gig opened the doors for me to start djing all around town in iconic clubs like Cheer Up Charlies, Coconut Club, etc etc… then the pandemic hit. I spend probably half of the first 6 months in lock down learning about my passion for coffee, working delivering groceries during the day and taking classes at night. At some point clubs started to open again and I was such in an urge to be around other people that I started to work really close with Coconut Club which later become my home. I proposed Brian (Coconut Club founder and owner) to do a small coffee shop inside Coconut to help them sell food and have more options to hep with rent since it was really hard to stay a float. Some deals fell in the right place and We created Cuatro Gato. It started as a Coffee Shop and We will sell Venezuelan food, then Mexican food, then it turned into a taqueria…. until it just became a club. Everything started to be normal again and I needed to start create theme nights again and that’s how Perreo Club was born, first year it was just every Friday at Cuatro Gato until SXSW 2021 when everything exploded, that year I got invited to curate the first latinx Boiler Room in Austin which led to get invited to EDC Mexico, and to start a residency in Miami. FL and Houston, TX. I think EDC Mexico was when I realized that what I had created was gonna be a platform that I wanted to expand and support different artist from around the globe and be able to bring the music I grow up with around.
Now Perreo Club is just part of my life and has let me share stages around the globe with djs I respect a lot and that happen to also be my best friends, also Ive been exploring my career as a producer.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think the biggest struggle come with finding a balance within yourself. I was used to be backstage, so it was kinda weird to learn to be in the front, specially dealing with criticism that affects mental health. Also I feel like this industry (as any) are rule by just some few so it’s a struggle to try to find your own path and not be discourage when doors don’t open or when people try to make you feel that you can’t do it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a DJ, I think I’m recognized mostly because of my style of mixing and the events I do as a promoter like Perreo Club, which is a Latinx party focused in Latin club rhythms and reggaeton and that creates an inclusive spot for the latinx community. I have grown really good known in the latin scene in Texas as well as the north of Mexico. I recently I’m starting my own productions so stay tune to it!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
mmmm I listen to a lot of playlist in Spotify and I mean what makes my life easier is the Notion app I couldn’t do as much without it.
