Community Highlights: Meet Cary Austin of Austin Drone Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cary Austin.

Hi Cary, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We started our drone services business after years in the videography industry. Driven by our desire to bring high quality aerial story telling and data collection to the doorstep of industries across Austin. We started out slowly, doing projects for free to get our foot in the door. Eventually, through many trials and errors and iterations, we have arrived where we are today. We’ve done projects ranging from 10 tonne generator installation reports, to the record breaking Savanah Bananas game at Kyle Field in College station, to a massive renewable farm in San Angelo. Our focus this year is in major construction projects, from commercial real estate, to residential builds, to data centers. Our business has been focused on integrating high quality project tracking data and photography to teams across the state. We found a gap in the workflow of many large projects, which is communication about existing conditions. Too often the sub contractors, the general contractors, the project managers, the architects and developers are not on the same page and find themselves playing catch up with one another. This incurs unnecessary labor costs and increases friction among the stake holders. We are trying to innovate practices throughout the construction industry from floor to ceiling and integrate drone services as a vital and cost saving practice thats a part of every new build.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacles have been figuring out where we can excel amongst the industry. There are limitless applications for drones, and our greatest challenge was determining not only where we fit, but where we can advance the use cases forward.

We’ve been impressed with Austin Drone Company, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We have transformed our operation into a robust selection of services from media and corporate events and advertising, to live professional televised sports that have aired on ESPN, to cell tower inspections for national telecom developers like Ericsson. Our main focus is now on large scare construction projects. We have secured large partnerships with legacy titans of the construction industry such as Kiewit. The thing that sets us apart from our competitors is our insistence on solving a communication at scale throughout the entire construction industry. Existing conditions, progress tracking, and communication driven administrative work can often fall to the back burner for project managers, project engineers, and business development coordinators and specialists. We believe firmly, that progress tracking photography, videography, and data lubricates the monthly and weekly deadlines in a way that is massively cost effective, and cost saving. Having clear, geo-identical photography of a site over the course of a project limits disputes between sub contractors, general contractors and developers, it is another contingency and liability safeguard to reinforce against unnecessary disputes and litigation, it keeps everyone in the loop on site progress, cleanliness, and material availability. It serves as an impressive and robust visualization to include in monthly progress reporting to developers. It establishes a clear, publish ready portfolio for a companies ongoing projects. It serves as a basis for media and advertising content, all without having to source, manage or organize any of these considerations because the experts at Austin Drone Company hand over these deliverables on a 24 hour turn around. What sets us apart is our insistence on understanding the challenges our clients face, and helping them to overcome, to solve, and offload those problems onto us in a way that saves them money and keeps them under budget.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years the industry will shift towards increasing automation, domestic manufactured drones deployed at scale, and we will see an increase in the demand for high quality progress tracking drone photography and videography.
