Today we’d like to introduce you to Devoreaux Walton.
Hi Devoreaux, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I booked my first international solo luxury trip in June 2013 to Paris, France. I didn’t know how to best prepare, so I followed advice from a few friends that had been abroad before and made some guesses about how to plan, pack, and navigate a foreign country with a dominant language I couldn’t fluently speak. That trip was fun, exciting, amazing, and also frustrating and scary. I learned a lot on that trip, and it was the beginning of my love affair with global solo luxury travel. Each trip I took after that, I always learned at least one thing I could improve to make the next solo trip better. In 2015, while working a full-time corporate job, I started business consulting in my free time on nights and weekends. It was a nice side hustle to get some extra money, but I didn’t think much of it at the time as my ultimate career goal. In 2016, I learned about citizenship by investment and that sparked my fascination with global immigration. I was working a corporate job at the time, but had been interested in a work from anywhere role, and continued applying for corporate jobs that would allow me to have control over my location and life.
In 2021, I took a solo luxury trip to London, United Kingdom and didn’t check my email before heading to the airport only to find that my flight had been delayed – information I could have known before leaving the house if I had looked at my email earlier that morning. That was the turning point for my streamlined solo global trips. My next solo luxury trip that year, to Montego Bay, Jamaica, I planned differently. It was my first time traveling using systems I created for easy, effortless international solo travel – including lists and routines that eliminated decision fatigue, confusion, and anxiety for planning, travel days, and the overall experience abroad. I made a list of packing essentials so I wouldn’t forget things that would support my comfort. I had a checklist of what to do the week before arrival and departure days. I made criteria for selecting my accommodations to ensure I chose the best place for me, not only the most popular place with trending reviews. It made a big difference; I had the least stressful trip to Montego Bay, out of all my solo global adventures. I was hooked on my new routine. I decided to maintain my solo travel systems and refine them with each trip to continue improvement. In 2024, I was talking to my best friend about their upcoming solo luxury trip giving advice and suggestions. My bestie took tedious notes, and looked up from writing and said “you know a lot about this, why don’t you make it a business and get paid to help people take their best solo global trips”? That conversation planted the seed, and months later, I had a God given name and business plan. I put my ideas down on paper making it real by the end of the year.
Abroading was officially born. In 2025, I was laid off for the third and final time. I knew it was my chance to do something different, to build my life the way I truly wanted. Instead of pursuing a fully remote job in a corporation, I pivoted into self-employment. I leveraged my business consulting firm and went all in. As the year ended, I successfully had a work from anywhere career that I built allowing me location freedom and career control. I knew location independent income was a goal a lot of other fellow solo luxury travelers had, and in 2026 I added it to the offerings of Abroading. I am passionate about solo global mobility, life freedom, location freedom, and career freedom – and now I’m proud to inspire, educate, and empower people to build their dream solo global lives turning them from ideas into reality with Abroading.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As I designed my business plan for Abroading, who my target audience was and what problems I wanted to solve for them, I had a hard time deciding how everything made sense together under one umbrella. I saw other coaches, consultants and influencers focusing on one topic: just solo budget travel or travel planning or how to travel solo for the first time. There was a time during my journey building Abroading that I felt discouraged and that the products and services that I wanted to offer wouldn’t make sense or wouldn’t fit together in one business. What changed the game for me was putting things down on paper. I’m a bit old fashioned that way. I had fun brainstorming and would see ideas written down, then it immediately became clear how everything fit together in one seamless package to be a business that served one niche, target audience with a few primary challenges they are having around solo global mobility – through travel and career.
I’m grateful to trust the vision God gifted me and to have more ideas than I can implement at one time, which has been another challenge. I’ve always been a strategist and love dreaming up ideas that are exciting. When I have a new idea, for example, launching a podcast, I want to do it right away. But I’ve had to create a timeline that prioritizes the things I want to in a way that won’t overwhelm me and take the fun out of running this company. The way I think of it is like phases for different initiatives, and I can always do more over time, but if I do twenty things poorly that will be a waste of effort and time; instead, I’m taking the approach of doing fewer things well and giving myself time to accomplish the large projects and goals that I want to pursue.
