The story of Leah Tremblay’s journey into the world of short-term vacation rentals (STRs) began not with a business plan, but with a personal connection to a place. Over eight years ago, while Leah and her husband were living in California, they felt the pull of real estate investment. However, as the local California market became increasingly cost-prohibitive, they were forced to look beyond their own backyard to find their first opportunity.
The search led them back to Hawaii, specifically to a condo project in Princeville where they had shared their honeymoon. This emotional tie became the foundation for their first investment, Four Palms at Sealodge.
That first investment in Hawaii was just the beginning. Since then, Leah’s portfolio and expertise have expanded significantly, reaching into markets like Palm Springs, California, and Austin and Fredericksburg, Texas. Her growth was fueled by a commitment to “sweat equity”—the hands-on work of building furniture, mounting TVs, and learning the “handywoman” tricks necessary to maintain a property to the highest standards.
Today, Leah’s journey has come full circle. Having built a successful business from that first honeymoon condo, she has transformed a passion for hospitality into a community-driven investment model and unique guest experiences.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Throughout this evolution, Leah discovered that successful hosting is about more than just providing a place to sleep; it’s about the “WOW” factor—the architectural draws, unique views, or eclectic personalities that create lasting memories for guests. From managing back-to-back bookings during Hawaiian hurricanes to expanding our Fredericksburg mini farm to include Leroy the Llama and our herd of dwarf goats, Leah has navigated the complexities of regulations, dynamic weather, and maintenance with a focus on professionalizing the market.
The path to professionalizing the Fredericksburg ranch has not been without its unique hurdles. Beyond the logistical feat of relocating Leroy the Llama and our herd of Nigerian dwarf goats to their new mini-barn, we have had to manage significant environmental and infrastructure challenges. During periods of intense Texas weather, we navigated the complexities of neighborhood road flooding, which required constant coordination and clear communication with arriving guests to ensure their safety and access. Perhaps the most demanding maintenance test came during the height of the busy winter holidays, when our well system suffered a major electrical shortage. Maintaining guest comfort while managing emergency repairs during a peak booking period reinforced our commitment to the “WOW” factor through resilient and professional hospitality.
