Community Highlights: Meet Mariah Salazar of The Travel Esthetician

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Salazar.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up in a small town, I always felt called to something bigger. I knew I belonged in the beauty industry—I just didn’t know where I fit yet. I enrolled in beauty school after dropping out of college, where I was studying business technology. Then COVID hit, and in that moment I realized that path wasn’t meant for me.

I worked retail to support myself through school, and I even failed my state exam several times. School was never my thing. But once I finally passed, I didn’t waste a second—I opened my studio right in the heart of downtown Abilene, Texas. I started with waxing and brows, slowly built my clientele, and added more services as I grew.

After about two years, everything changed. I was invited to work a charity event for a client going through chemo—three hours away. Something in me knew I had to go. And I’m so glad I did, because that moment opened my eyes to a huge gap in the beauty industry: people needed concierge spa services that met them where they were.

From that point forward, I started marketing myself, traveling across Texas for spa parties, bachelorette groups, retreats, and events. Eventually, I was booked every single weekend. That’s when I made the decision to close my studio and go fully mobile. I moved to Austin, where the demand was high but the options were scarce—and I quickly became one of the few providers offering full skincare services on-the-go.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road — honestly, it’s been the complete opposite. For a long time, I felt like I was in a waiting season, constantly wondering when it would finally be my turn to see success. Everything changed when I shifted my mindset and decided to take a different path by going fully mobile.
Building a mobile skincare business has been extremely challenging, especially because it’s still a newer concept in the industry. When I moved to Austin in the summer of 2024, I started from zero. But 1.5 years, countless trial-and-error moments, and a lot of resilience later, I now have 13 active partnerships specializing in solo sessions and spa parties—partnerships that bring me real client retention and opportunities I once prayed for.
I’ve contacted dozens of hotels trying to collaborate, and I’ve been turned down over and over again. I’d be lying if I said I never doubted myself. But every rejection became fuel. Every ‘no’ became growth. And today, not only do I have strong partnerships in Austin, but I’ve also grown my business beyond Austin, expanding into Miami and now teaching other beauty professionals how to stand out and scale with confidence.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business is a concierge spa service specializing in mobile facials, skincare, brows, and luxury beauty experiences brought directly to clients’ homes, hotels, or event locations. What makes my brand unique is that I noticed a major gap in the beauty industry—high-quality, on-demand skincare services weren’t easily accessible, especially for clients who were unable to travel or who preferred a private, elevated experience. I built my business around solving that problem.

I launched my career in a small downtown studio in Abilene, Texas, but everything shifted after I took on a charity booking for a client undergoing chemo treatment. Driving three hours to provide that service opened my eyes to how deeply needed concierge spa care truly is. That moment led me to transition fully into mobile services, and since then I’ve traveled across Texas for bachelorette groups, retreat weekends, brand events, private spa parties, and home-based luxury treatments.

Today, I’m proud to serve two thriving markets—Austin and Miami. In Austin, I became one of the few providers offering full professional skincare services on-the-go, and expanding into Miami has allowed me to bring that same elevated experience to a market known for beauty, luxury, and wellness.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that my business is built on compassion, accessibility, and excellence. My clients know me for providing a spa-level experience wherever they are, for creating a comfortable, luxury environment in any setting, and for tailoring each service to their exact needs.

What I want readers to know is simple: my mission is to bring high-end, personalized skincare and beauty services directly to you—whether you’re getting ready for an event, hosting a group spa day, or simply craving self-care without the stress of traveling. I’ve built this brand from the ground up with intention, heart, and a commitment to giving clients the kind of luxury they can feel, not just see.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising that most people don’t know is that I didn’t grow up around entrepreneurship or the beauty industry at all. I struggled in school, failed my licensing exam several times, and started my career with absolutely no connections—just determination. On top of that, I was constantly being told that my business wouldn’t go anywhere and that I needed to ‘be realistic.’ I didn’t have much support, but I kept going anyway. People often assume my growth came easily, but the truth is, it came from persistence, risk-taking, and believing in a vision long before anyone else did.
