Community Highlights: Meet Nikhila Narra Davis of Kalasi Cellars/Narra Vineyards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikhila Narra Davis.

Hi Nikhila Narra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I first immersed myself in the Texas wine industry in 2013 when I founded Narra Vineyards, where I now manage 140 acres of vines. Along the way, I honed my craft, working in the cellar at Cakebread Cellars in Napa Valley, obtaining a sommelier certification, and completing viticulture and winemaking programs at Texas Tech University and UC Davis. In 2018, my husband, Greg, and I co-founded Kalasi Cellars. I am now one of Texas’ leading female grape growers and winemakers. Kalasi Cellars embodies my deep expertise and passion for crafting exceptional wines. I also hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, with concentrations in international business, finance, and economics, as well as a Master’s in Public Relations, both from The University of Southern Mississippi.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. As one of the first female grape growers in Texas, I was entering an industry with few others who shared my vision. I wanted to focus on quality and create wines that had the richness and depth I felt were missing from Texas wines at the time. But that ambition came with its challenges. I was new to farming, and it took time to learn the ins and outs of the land and vines. Later, when I shifted into winemaking, being one of the younger winemakers in the industry added another layer of difficulty, as I had to earn respect and prove myself in a field dominated by more established names. But each struggle taught me something valuable, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to see how far Texas wine has come and how my own work has contributed to that growth.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Kalasi Cellars is a boutique winery that’s deeply rooted in the values of quality and craftsmanship. We specialize in creating exceptional, handcrafted wines that truly represent the best of Texas. Our focus is on producing wines that are rich, complex, and balanced—qualities that were hard to find in Texas wines when we started. We grow a number of varietals, but we’re particularly known for our reds, like Cabernet Sauvignon and Teroldego, which thrive in the Texas climate.

What sets Kalasi Cellars apart is our commitment to both the art and science of winemaking. We take a hands-on approach to every step of the process, from cultivating the vines to bottling the wine. We’re also deeply focused on sustainable practices and ensuring that every bottle reflects the quality of the land and the care we put into it.

I’m especially proud of how Kalasi Cellars has become a reflection of my journey in the wine industry and my desire to elevate Texas wine. We’re not just making wine; we’re telling the story of Texas through our bottles. What I want readers to know is that Kalasi Cellars isn’t just a winery—it’s a passion project, a symbol of what can be achieved when you challenge the status quo, and a testament to the incredible potential of Texas as a wine region. We offer a personalized experience, from tastings to private events, and we love sharing our story and our wines with anyone eager to learn more about Texas wine.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the past decade, the quality of wine in Texas has grown significantly, and it’s propelled us onto the global stage. Texas is now being recognized not just as a wine region, but as a destination known for its passion, heritage, and outstanding wines. Looking ahead, the landscape of Fredericksburg is poised for major transformation. With more luxury resorts and upscale restaurants coming to the area, our visitors will be seeking not only exceptional wine but also a remarkable, unforgettable experience to match.
